BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2
PORTLAND, Ore. – Corban's baseball team extended its season-high winning streak to four games with a double header sweep of NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark, 6-3 & 4-2, Sunday at Huston Sports Complex.
Freshman
Marc Gallegos would lead the Warriors' bat-attack with a four-hit afternoon, while senior
Steven Blum and sophomore
Lance Foster each collected three hits in the twin bill. Sophomore
Gregg Romero drove in a team-high two runs for Corban, while junior
Caleb Virtue and sophomore
Justin White each collected wins against Lewis & Clark.
GAME #1 – CORBAN 6, LEWIS & CLARK 3
After a scoreless three-and-a-half innings to start the game, Lewis & Clark got on the board first via a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning by Michael Ball that gave the host Pioneers an early 1-0 lead.
Corban wasted no time in taking the lead, as the Warriors plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning via a bases loaded sacrifice fly by freshman
Tyler Atkinson that scored fellow freshman
Logan Mordhorst and a perfectly executed double steal by Gallegos and Romero that scored the eventual game-winning run and put the Warriors up 2-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, Corban added four more runs to the scoreboard when Mordhorst lifted a bases loaded sacrifice fly into right field that allowed Foster to score. The very next batter – freshman
Jordan Johansen – singled to right field to bring home senior
Jonathan Ramirez, while a Gallegos single extended Corban's lead to four runs (5-1) before Romero capped the Warriors' scoring via a RBI groundout that brought home Johansen and put Corban up 6-1.
Lewis & Clark would add two more runs to its total in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Geoff Wertz ripped a run-scoring double to left field before Nick Lavin ended the game's scoring with a RBI double to right center that pulled the host Pioneers within three runs (6-3).
Despite Lewis & Clark getting runners to third in both the sixth and seventh innings, Corban senior
Anthony Wirkkala would get the game's final out to help the Warriors earn the three-run victory (6-3).
White would start the game on the hill for Corban allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits over the opening 5.2 innings before senior
Mike McKay and Wirkkala combined to pitch the final 1.1 innings.
Lewis & Clark was led offensively by Wertz's three-hit effort, while Ryan Strombom went the distance for the Pioneers allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts.
GAME #2 – CORBAN 4, LEWIS & CLARK 2
In the finale, Corban scored the game's opening run in the top of the third inning when Foster roped an infield single that brought home junior
Kyle Kunkel for an early 1-0 Warrior lead.
Junior
Andy Hill would put Corban up by two runs in the top of the fourth inning via a RBI double down the right field line that scored Johansen before Kunkel brought home junior
Alex Bost on a groundout to third base that extended the Warriors' lead to three runs (3-0).
Lewis & Clark would attempt to cut into Corban's lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ball grounded out to short allowing Eric Hyun to score from third following his leadoff double to right field, as the score turned to 3-1 in favor of the visiting Warriors.
Neither team would score again until the seventh inning when Corban got a RBI single to left field by Romero that plated Gallegos following his leadoff single and a pair of stolen bases, as the Warriors grabbed a three-run advantage (4-1) heading into the game's final at-bat.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Lewis & Clark was able to get one run back on an Andrew Traver double to right center that allowed Corey Davis to score. Fortunately for Corban, sophomore reliever and reigning CCC Pitcher of the Week
Ryan Rodriguez was able to get the game's final three outs to help preserve the two-run Warriors victory (4-2).
Virtue went the opening 6.0-plus innings for Corban allowing two earned runs on six hits with a game-high four strikeouts before Rodriguez came in midway through the seventh inning allowing a mere one hits with one K.
Lewis & Clark was led offensively by Mike Kinkenon's perfect 2-for-2 performance, while Ball went the distance for the Pioneers allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts.
With today's sweep, Corban improves to 7-1 on the season and Lewis & Clark remains winless at 0-8. The Warriors will return to diamond on Friday, February 24th, against cross town rival and NCAA Division III member Willamette in a single game beginning at 3:00 p.m. on John Lewis Field in Salem.
