Winning Streak Pushed to Three With Sweep of Cavs

PORTLAND, Ore. – In an afternoon double header against NAIA West rival Concordia, Corban's baseball team scored a combined 26 runs on 23 hits in a sweep of the Cavaliers, 21-5 & 5-2, Saturday at Hilken Community Stadium.

With today's sweep, Corban pushes its current winning streak to three games improving to 13-8 overall and 5-6 in NAIA West play. Meanwhile, Concordia falls to 12-11 overall and 5-6 in NAIA West games.

On the afternoon, senior Colby Sokol went a combined 5-for-9 at the plate with three runs scored and five runs batted in. Meanwhile, fellow senior Cody Atkinson and sophomore Ryan Rodriguez collected three hits each with each player scoring three runs and Atkinson driving in five RBI.

In the opener, senior Tyler Doornink went the opening 7.0 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits to go along with three strikeouts en route to earning his third win of the season. Junior Jacob Kopra would earn his first victory of the season in a relief role in the finale, as the 6-foot-4 right-hander went the final 3.0 innings allowing just one hit after sophomore Justin White went the opening 6.0 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with a pair of K's.

GAME #1 – CORBAN 21, CONCORDIA 5

In Game #1, Concordia scored the first four runs over the opening three innings before Corban struck for 21 unanswered runs that included an 11-run fourth inning.

The Warriors would erupt for 11 runs in the top of the fourth inning, as sophomore Lance Foster began the scoring with a two-run single to left field followed by a bases loaded walk by sophomore Kris Gokey that pulled Corban within a single run (4-3). Rodriguez would then put the Warriors up for good via a two-run single to center field, as freshman Marc Gallegos increased Corban's lead with a RBI double down the left field line for a two-run lead (6-4). Sophomore Gregg Romero and Sokol would add a pair of run-scoring hits that pushed the score to 8-4 in favor of the visiting team before Atkinson capped the scoring with a three-run home run over the left field fence that pushed the Warriors' lead to seven runs (11-4).

Corban would add six more runs in the top of the fifth inning, as Sokol and Atkinson each drove in two runs to go along with a run-scoring double down the left field line by freshman Tyler Atkinson and a run off a Concordia error that began the inning to push the Warriors' lead to 13 runs (17-4).

In the top of the sixth inning, Corban would add its final four runs on the board thanks to a two-run single to right field by Sokol as well as RBI by Romero and freshman Jordan Johansen for a 21-4 lead.

Concordia would plate its fifth and final run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Carl Beckert lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Cameron Baker to score for the final margin of 16 runs (21-5).

Sokol would lead the Warriors' offensive charge with a 4-for-5 showing with three runs scored and five RBI, while Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Concordia would get hits from nine different players, while Eric Weir suffered the loss going the opening 3.2 innings allowing 10 earned runs on seven hits before a pair of Cavalier relievers went the final 5.1 innings allowing 11 runs (five earned) on 10 hits.

GAME #2 – CORBAN 5, CONCORDIA 2

In Saturday's finale, Corban would score the opening two runs in the top of the second inning on a run-scoring double by senior Steven Blum before he came around to score on an error by the Cavaliers for an early 2-0 lead.

Concordia would put single runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings on a single by Beckert and a sacrifice fly by Nathan Douglas that knotted the score at 2-2.

Neither team would score again until the top of the ninth inning when Corban plated three runs with two outs that included a RBI single to right center by Foster for the eventual game-winning run. Gokey would cap the day's scoring with a two-run single up the middle that scored Blum and junior Jeremiah Forrister for the final margin of three runs (5-2).

Blum would lead Corban's offense with a 2-for-2 performance that included two runs scored, while Gokey drove in a team-high two runs.

Concordia was led by Beckert and Jordan Keeker with two hits each, while Jason Snodgrass went the opening 8.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits before Jared Young went the final inning allowing three earned runs on four hits en route to suffering the loss.

These same two teams will close out this weekend's four-game series with a single nine-inning game tomorrow – Sunday, March 18th – beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Hilken Community Stadium in Portland.
