Warriors Sweep Lions of Patten in Rare Triple Header

OAKLAND, Calif. – Junior Jacob Kopra pitched a complete game shutout in Game #2, as Corban's baseball team swept a rare NAIA West triple header against the Lions of Patten by scores of 6-4, 7-0, & 3-1 Friday at Laney College.

With today's sweep, Corban moves to 18-11 overall and 10-9 in NAIA West play. Meanwhile, Patten falls to 7-19 overall and 3-12 in NAIA West games.

Friday's double header was moved to three seven-inning games, as the Bay Area is expecting nearly 0.60 inches of rain Saturday.

On the afternoon, senior Steven Candelaria led the Warriors' offensive attack with a combined 5-for-9 performance with a team-leading three runs batted in. Sophomore Gregg Romero and freshman Marc Gallegos also collected four hits each, while seniors Colby Sokol and Steven Blum registered three hits apiece over the three games.

GAME #1 – CORBAN 6, PATTEN 4

The opening game would begin with Patten scoring three runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning, as Jesse Madrid began the scoring with a RBI single to right field before Alberto Gonzalez ended the Lions' scoring with a run-scoring single to right center that handed Patten an early three-run lead (3-0).

Corban would get two runs back in the top of the second inning when Candelaria led off with a double to left field before coming home on a RBI double to right center by Blum that got the Warriors on the board. Two batters later, Gallegos drove in Blum with a run-scoring ground out that pulled Corban within a single run (3-2).

Neither team would score again until the top of the fourth inning when Corban single up the middle by Gallegos that scored Blum, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. Gallegos' second RBI of the game would tie the score at 3-3.

Corban would take the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning when Candelaria ripped a single to right center that scored senior Cody Atkinson after he reached on a Patten error. The Warriors' very next batter – Blum – would plate Corban's fifth run of the game via a sacrifice fly to center field that scored sophomore Lance Foster after he reached base on a fielder's choice making the score 5-3 in favor of the visiting team.

Patten would get within a single run (5-4) in the bottom of the fifth inning when Gonzalez doubled to right center allowing Jay Almendral to score from first after his two-out single to left field.

The visiting Warriors would tack on another run in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore Kris Gokey led off the at-bat with a double to right field before coming around to score on a Patten error for the final score of 6-4.

Candelaria would led Corban's bat-attack with a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored and one RBI, while sophomore Justin White went the opening 6.0 innings for the Warriors allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits en route to picking up his team-leading sixth win of the season. Sophomore reliever Ryan Rodriguez would get the final three outs en route to earning his team-best fifth save of the year.

Patten was led offensively by Gonzalez with a pair of hits, while Isaac Duran went the distance for the Lions allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits.

GAME #2 – CORBAN 7, PATTEN 0

Friday's middle game would be a pitcher's duel between Corban's Kopra and Patten's Jason Kellar over the opening five innings until the visiting Warriors scored a combined seven runs over the final two innings en route to picking up the win.

In the top of the sixth inning, Corban finally broke the scoreless tie with on a RBI double to right field by Sokol that scored Gallegos following his leadoff single. The Warriors would add another run one batter later when freshman Tyler Atkinson plated Romero from third on a ground out for a 2-0 Corban lead.

The top of the seventh inning would see the visiting Warriors score five runs on four hits with the highlight coming from Gallegos on the base paths. After registering a one-out single to center field, Gallegos proceeded to advance to second on a Romero single following a Patten pitching change. The speedy first-year Warrior would then steal third before swiping home in a rare feat that put Corban up by the score of 3-0. Two more RBI followed by a two-run double down the left field line by Candelaria would cap the game's scoring, as Corban walked away with a hard-fought seven-run victory (7-0).

Gallegos, Romero, and the elder Atkinson would each collect two hits for the Warriors, while Kopra went the distance allowing five hits with a game-high one strikeout en route to picking up his third win of the season.

Five different Patten players would register hits, while Kellar went the opening 6.1 innings allowing three earned runs on six hits before a pair of Lion relievers – Mark Truitt and Justin Byrne – pitched the final 0.2 innings allowing four earned runs on three hits.

GAME #3 – CORBAN 3, PATTEN 1

The third and final game on Friday would see another pitcher's duel between Corban's Doornink and Patten's David Whiteside, as both combined to allow one earned run on 12 hits with Doornink getting the offensive help that was need to pick up his fourth win of the season.

Corban would put two runs on the board in the top of the second inning when the younger Atkinson led off with a single to third before coming home to score three batters later on a failed pickoff attempt by Patten for an early 1-0 lead. Following the Lion miscue, junior Jeremiah Forrister ripped a run-scoring single down the left field line to bring home junior pinch runner Andy Hill with the eventual game-winning run that resulted in a 2-0 Corban lead.

Patten would get one run back in the bottom of the second inning when Tyler Provost laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought home Gonzalez after he led off the inning with a single to right field making the score 2-1 in favor of the visiting team.

Corban would get its third and final run of the afternoon in the top of the seventh inning when freshman pinch-hitter Jordan Johansen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded bringing home Gallegos after he advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt four batters earlier for the final margin of 3-1.

Eight different Warriors would register a hit in the finale, while Doornink went the distance allowing one earned run on four hits with a team-high two strikeouts.

Patten would get hits from four different players, while Whitehead went the distance allowing three unearned runs on eight hits with a game-high five K's.

After Saturday's game was rained out, Corban will return to the field on Wednesday, April 4th, against cross town rival and NCAA Division III member Willamette beginning at 4;00 p.m. on John Lewis Field at Roy S. "Spec" Keene Stadium in Salem.
