SALEM, Ore. – Thanks to sophomore Andrew Stenberg's first collegiate goal, Corban's men's soccer team earned a hard-fought victory over the visiting Knights of Warner Pacific, 1-0, Saturday at Sparks Field on the campus of Willamette University.

With today's victory, Corban improves its record to 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific falls to 2-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in CCC play.

In an evenly played game over the opening 33-plus minutes, Corban was awarded the first golden scoring opportunity when sophomore Arsinio Walker was pulled down in the box by Warner Pacific's keeper drawing a red card and an automatic ejection for the Knights' net-minder. Following the penalty, Walker stepped up to take the penalty kick and sent his shot just left of the goal allowing the game to remain scoreless.

Just over four minutes later with Corban playing a man up, Stenberg would put the Warriors up by a single goal (1-0) when he redirected an initial shot by senior Tyler Hagen past a diving Warner Pacific keeper and into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal at the 37:52 mark.

Neither team would score again in the opening half, as Corban clung to a slim one-goal lead at intermission.

In the second half, Corban would earn another penalty kick in the 65th minute when a Warner Pacific defender was called for a hand ball in the penalty box. The Warriors' Hagen would step to the penalty spot this time and sent a hard-driven ball off the cross bar keeping the score 1-0 in favor of the home team.

Warner Pacific would have one last scoring opportunity in the 88th minute when Scott Schnitzer got his head on the ball and sent it towards a wide-open goal only to have Corban senior Tillerman Kroon direct the ball award from danger keeping the shut out alive.

Corban's freshman keeper Nash Yamauchi would make the first start of his young career registering a game-high five saves en route to recording the first shut out and victory of his career. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific would get a pair of saves from starter Drew Bonifacio before he received the game's lone red card and was replaced by Dorian Lair who recorded a team-high three saves despite allowing the game's only goal.

Overall, Corban recorded six more shots (14-to-6) than Warner Pacific with both teams putting six shots on goal. Warner Pacific would earn six more corner kicks (8-to-2) than Corban, while the Knights were also whistled for eight more fouls (18-to-10).

“Our performance today forces us to take a good honest look at ourselves," said head coach Paul Meehan. "It was not a rewarding victory when we all know that not only did Warner Pacific out play us, they did so with 10 men for 60 minutes. We are far better than we showed today and thankfully we have a couple days to redeem ourselves and get back to playing the way we know how.”

Corban will return to action on Wednesday, September 19th, against The Evergreen State College beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Evergreen's Pitch in Olympia, Washington.
