SPOKANE, Wash. – For the second straight game, sophomore
Josh Hamilton scored the Warriors' lone goal as Corban's men's soccer team opened play at the Whitworth Soccer Classic with a 2-1 loss to the host Pirates Friday at Whitworth's Soccer Field.
With today's result, Corban falls to 1-1-1 overall and Whitworth improves to 2-0-1 on the season.
The NCAA Division III's No. 23-ranked Whitworth would get on the board first when Andrew French netted an unassisted goal in the 44th minute to give the host Pirates a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Just under 15 minutes into the second half, Corban would get the equalizer when Hamilton teamed with senior
Tyler Hagen on a pass across the middle that found Hamilton's foot. With a view of the goal, Hamilton would unleash a shot that found the back of the net for his second goal of the year tying the score at 1-1 at the 59:10 mark.
A mere 15 seconds later, Whitworth would retake the lead when Robby Ubben unloaded on a shot from the middle that eluded Corban's goalkeeper for the eventual game-winning goal at the 59:25 mark.
Over the next two minutes, Corban would attempt to score the game-tying goal as the Warriors registered three straight shots without finding the back of the net.
Corban's final attempt would come in the 85th minute when freshman
Taylor Satcher recorded back-to-back shots with 30 seconds of each other only to have each shot go off target for the final tally of 2-1 in favor of the home team.
Sophomore
Steven Mason would stand between the pipes throughout the game, but would not register a save as both Whitworth shots on goal would find the back of the net.
Whitworth would platoon its keepers, as Kyle Novak manned the goal for the first half registering one save before giving way to Nate Bell for the second half in which he also made a single save.
Offensively, Corban would control the flow registering one more shot (9-to-8) and one more shot on goal (3-to-2) than Whitworth. The host Pirates would record one more corner kick (4-to-3) with Corban being whistled for one more foul (6-to-5).
Corban will conclude play this weekend at the Whitworth Soccer Classic tomorrow – Saturday, September 8th – against NCAA Division III member Pacific Lutheran beginning on Omache Field at 3:00 p.m. on the campus of Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington.
