Warriors Roll Out Pair of Baker's Dozens to Open Classic

PASCO, Wash. – In the opening two games of the Swing Into Spring College Baseball Classic, Corban's baseball team put up a pair of baker's dozens scoring 13 runs in each game Friday against NCAA Division III members Puget Sound and Lewis & Clark at Gesa Stadium.

Corban (4-0) was led offensively by senior Derek Legg and junior Peter Martin with a combined 11 hits in the two games that included a pair of triples off Legg's bat. Four other Warriors – senior Andy Hill, junior Lance Foster, sophomore Jordan Johansen, and freshman Landon Frost – also had multi-hit games, while six other Corban players had at least one hit in the double header.

On the mound, senior Jamie McCaffrey picked up his second win of the season in the opener pitching the first 5.1 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits before turning the ball over to relief combo of seniors Caleb Virtue and David Hull for the final 3.2 innings. In the second game, freshman Daniel Cavazos got the start for the Warriors but allowed five earned runs on two hits in 0.2 innings of work before freshman Daniel Gober went the next 3.1 innings. Freshman Adam Shumka would be on the hill for the Warriors when Corban took the lead and registered his first collegiate win, while Hull and freshman closer Ransom Storm combined to get the game's final six outs.

GAME #1 – CORBAN 13, PUGET SOUND 4

In the opening game of the Swing Into Spring College Baseball Classic, Corban scored the first five runs in two innings highlighted by run-scoring hits by Legg and Martin that were added to RBIs by Johansen and senior Kyle Kunkel making the score 4-0 in favor of Corban after the first inning.

The Warriors would go ahead 5-0 after the second inning when junior Gregg Romero ripped a run-scoring single to right field that brought home sophomore Marc Gallegos, who had register a one-out triple just before Romero stepped to the plate.

Puget Sound (3-1) would come back in the bottom of the third inning when the Loggers scored two runs on hits by Kaulana Smith and Christian Carter, as UPS pulled within three runs (5-2).

In the top of the fifth inning, Corban would add two more runs to its total on a RBI single to left field by Martin followed by a sacrifice fly to center field by Johansen to put the Warriors ahead 7-2.

One inning later, Corban would put the game out of reach as the Warriors tacked on four runs highlighted by Johansen's two-run single to center field that scored Foster and Legg making the score 11-2 un favor of Corban.

Puget Sound would get a RBI groundout by Lucas Stone in the bottom of the sixth inning before Corban put its 12th run on the board in the top of the eighth inning via a run-scoring single through the right side bhy Foster to increase the Warriors' lead to 12-3.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, UPS scored its final run of the game on an Addison Melzer single to right center making the score 12-4 in favor of Corban.

The Warriors would score their final run of the game in the top of the ninth inning when Foster was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that allowed freshman Steven Kha to score from third for the final tally of 13-4.

Puget Sound would get two hits each from Smith and Stone, while Steve Wager suffered the loss allowing six earned runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work.

GAME #2 – CORBAN 13, LEWIS & CLARK 7

For the third time in the past seven days, Corban and Lewis & Clark (0-3) met on the diamond with the Warriors coming away with their third win of the season against the Pioneers.

Despite allowing LCC to score five runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits that included a two-run single through the left side by Matthew Cathcart and a two-run infield single by Christian MacDonald, Corban got on the board in the top of the second inning thanks to a double to center field by senior Jeremiah Forrister that brought home junior Nate Williams to make the score 5-1 in favor of Lewis & Clark.

Neither team would score again until the top of the fifth inning when Corban put six runs on the board that included a two-RBI triple down the right field line by Legg and a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman Lathan Alger that capped the scoring for the Warriors and gave Corban the lead for good (7-5).

Corban would put three more runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning when Alger brought home junior Marc Labarthe on a sacrifice fly following Labarthe's lead-off triple to right center. One batter later, Foster ripped a triple down the right field line that brought home Hill before Foster scored on a wild pitch to make the score 10-5 in favor of the Warriors.

Despite runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings by Lewis & Clark, Corban put its final runs on the board in the top of the ninth inning when Williams lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Frost to score before senior Matt Hamlin roped a two-run triple to right center that scored Corban's 12th and 13th runs for the final tally of 13-7.

Cathcart would register three hits and three runs batted in for Lewis & Clark, while Blake Howell went the opening 4.0 innings for the Pioneers allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits before Kyle Tibbett took over and gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits in 2.2 innings of work to suffer the loss.

Corban will continue play tomorrow – Saturday, February 16th – at the Swing Into Spring College Baseball Classic against Puget Sound at 1:00 p.m. inside Gesa Stadium in Pasco, Washington.
