PORTLAND, Ore. – In the final game of the Cascade-Northwest Conference Challenge, Corban's baseball team could not overcome a four-run deficit falling to the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran, 8-1, Sunday at Hilken Community Stadium on the campus of Concordia University.
Corban (8-3) was led offensively by freshman
Steven Kha with a 2-for-4 performance that included a RBI, while senior
Andy Hill was also 2-for-4 at the plate with three other Warriors – junior
Lance Foster, junior
Gregg Romero, and sophomore
Marc Gallegos – collecting a hit each. On the mound, senior
Jacob Kopra went the opening 6.0 innings allowing six earned runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts before turning the ball over to a pair of relievers – freshman
Adam Shumka and sophomore
Andy Thiessen – for the final 3.0 innings.
Pacific Lutheran (6-3) got a 3-for-4 performance from Curtis Wildung that included scoring two runs and driving in three RBI, while Nicholas Wall was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in. The Lutes' Trevor Lubking went the opening 5.0 innings allowing one earned run on five hits with a game-high eight K's en route to picking up the win, while Jake Otness, Cory Nelson, and Nathan Shoup combined to pitch the final four innings.
Neither team would score until the top of the second inning when Drew Oord registered a one-out single up the middle before coming home one batter later on a triple by Wildung for an early 1-0 PLU lead.
One inning later, Pacific Lutheran would put its second and eventual game-winning run on the board when Dominick Courcy led off with a double down the left field line before coming home one batter later on a ground out to short by Collin Nilson putting the Lutes ahead by the score of 2-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, Pacific Lutheran would blow the game wide open scoring three runs on four hits that included a double down the left field line by Carson McCord that scored Oord before Wildung drove home McCord on a ground out. Two batters later, Courcy drove home the Lutes' fifth run of the game on a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Nicholas Hall to put Pacific Lutheran ahead by the score of 5-0.
Corban would put its lone run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Hill led off with a triple to left field before coming home one batter later on a Kha single to center field making the score 5-1 in favor of the designated visiting team.
In the top of the sixth inning, Pacific Lutheran would get a two-out solo home run off the bat of Wildung before adding its final run of the game two innings later on a run-scoring double down the left field line by Hall that scored McCord making the final score 8-1 in favor of PLU.
Corban will return to action on Tuesday, February 26th, against NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Portland.
