KEIZER, Ore. – To open the 2013 season, Corban's baseball team earned a double header sweep, 4-2 & 11-2, over NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark behind the strong pitching of senior
Jamie McCaffrey and junior
Justin White Saturday at Volcanoes Stadium.
Corban (2-0) was led offensively by sophomore
Marc Gallegos with four hits and three runs batted in, while junior
Peter Martin was 3-for-6 at the plate with a RBI. Junior
Lance Foster also registered three hits on the afternoon, while senior
Derek Legg and sophomore
Jordan Johansen tallied two hits each in the twin bill. McCaffrey went the opening seven inning in Game #1 allowing one earned run on six hits with a pair of strikeouts before giving way to a pair of freshman relievers –
Daniel Cavazos and
Ransom Storm – for the final two innings. In the night cap, White pitched the first five innings allowing two earned runs on six hits with three K's before the bullpen took over for the final 12 outs.
For Lewis & Clark (0-2), Mike Kinkenon led the Pioneers with a combined 4-for-9 performance at the plate with one run batted in and Eric Hyun provided a 3-for-5 day at the plate in the pair of losses. In Game #1, Mike Hathaway would get the start for the Pioneers allowing four runs (one earned) on 10 hits over the opening 5.0 innings before turning the ball over to Blake Howell for the final nine outs. Game #2 would see Ryan Strombom get the start going the first 4.1 innings allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits before the Pioneers' bullpen took over for the final 3.2 innings.
GAME #1 – CORBAN 4, LEWIS & CLARK 2
The season opener for both teams would remain scoreless until the bottom of the second inning when Foster led off with a single to right field for Corban and then advanced to second on an infield single by Martin. After freshman
Steven Kha reached base on a fielder's choice that registered the out at third base, the first-year Warrior was out at second on another fielder's choice that allowed senior
Kyle Kunkel to reach safely. In an attempt to turn the double play, Lewis & Clark over threw first base allowing Martin to come home with the game's opening run giving Corban an early 1-0 lead.
Lewis & Clark would not waste any time tying the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning when Geoff Wertz drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Cathcart. The very next batter – Kinkenon – ripped a single to left field that allowed Wertz to score from second to tie the game.
In the bottom of the third inning, Corban would retake the lead (2-1) when Gallegos opened the inning with a single up the middle before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior
Gregg Romero. After a groundout to short by Legg move Gallegos to third, the second-year Warrior scored on a passed ball.
One inning later, Corban would tack on another run via a single to the pitcher by freshman
Lathan Alger that allowed Martin to score his second run of Game #1 on a throwing error by Lewis & Clark pitcher making the score 3-1 in favor of the home team.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Warriors would put another run on the board when Martin ripped a single to right center that allowed Johansen to score following his two out walk putting Corban ahead by the score of 4-1.
Neither team would score again until Lewis & Clark made a final at-bat push to tie the game. In the top of the ninth inning, LCC's John Trupin would lead off with a walk before Evan Gray was hit by a pitch. With Hyun at the plate and a 2-0 count, head coach
Jeff McKay made a pitching change replacing Cavazos with Storm in the closer role. Storm would give up a single to Hyun that loaded the bases with no outs. After striking out lead off hitter, Brandon Lezak, Storm would get Wertz to pop out to second before walking Cathcart to make the score 4-2 in favor of Corban. With the tying run sitting 120 feet away, Storm would bear down and strike out Kinkenon to end the game giving the Warriors the two-run win (4-2).
GAME #2 – CORBAN 11, LEWIS & CLARK 2
The second game of the double header would be a different story for Corban, as the host Warriors scored two runs in their opening at-bat on a wild pitch that allowed Romero to score before Foster's ground out to short brought home Legg for a 2-0 Corban lead.
In the top of the second inning, Andrew Traver would lead off with a solo home run down the left field line that brought the Pioneers within a single run (2-1).
Wasting no time, Corban pushed its lead to three runs (4-1) in the bottom of the second inning when Johansen led off with a single to right center before coming around to score three batters later on a throwing error by the Pioneers' catcher on an attempted steal by freshman
Landon Frost. Two batters later, Gallegos would rip a run-scoring single to right field that brought home Frost for a three-run lead for the Warriors.
Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Lewis & Clark put its second and final run on the board via a RBI single to left field by Traver that scored Kinkenon following his two-out single to right center making the score 4-2 in favor of Corban.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Corban would blow the game wide open scoring six runs on two hits. Senior
Matt Hamlin would begin the scoring with a pinch-hit, two-run double to left center that brought home Gallegos and Legg. The very next batter – Johansen – would bring home Foster on a fielding error by Lewis & Clark before Alger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded making the score 7-2 in favor of Corban. After the Pioneers' second pitching change of the inning,. Gallegos roped a two-run double that brought home Johansen and junior
Marc Labarthe for a 10-2 Warrior advantage.
Corban would put its 11th and final run on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when Foster scored on another Lewis & Clark error on an attempted double play ball off the bat of Johansen making the advantage nine runs (11-2) for the host Warriors.
In the finale, Corban would use four pitchers – White, freshman
Daniel Gober, freshman
Adam Shumka, and senior
Caleb Virtue – over the nine innings as the quartet combined to allow two earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
Corban will return to action on Friday, February 15th, when they begin play at the Swing Into Spring College Baseball Classic against Puget Sound beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Gesa Stadium in Pasco, Washington.
