BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 | BOX SCORE 3

KEIZER, Ore. – In a rare triple header against the University of Antelope Valley, Corban's baseball team came away on the wrong end of the stick in two-of-three games against the Pioneers, 2-5, 4-3, and 3-8, Friday at Volcanoes Stadium.

Corban (14-9) and Antelope Valley (18-4) played three seven-inning games Friday due to the weather forecast over the weekend that calls for heavy rains to come through the Willamette Valley beginning around mid-afternoon on Saturday.

Junior Nate Williams led Corban offensively with six hits, while senior Kyle Kunkel registered five hits over the three games. Kunkel also score a combined two runs and picked up three RBI, while junior Gregg Romero had two runs batted in to go along with single runs batted in by four other Warriors – sophomore Jordan Johansen, senior Derek Legg, Williams, and freshman James Bledsoe, Jr. – over the three games.

On the mound, 10 different pitchers saw action for the Warriors. Senior Jamie McCaffrey, sophomore Andy Thiessen, and junior Justin White would get the starts for Corban, while senior Caleb Virtue, senior David Hull, freshman Ransom Storm, freshman Adam Shumka, Johansen, sophomore Bryce Watterud, and freshman Justin Knoll combined to pitch 14.2 innings of relief.

Antelope Valley was led offensively by Steven Tremlin with a combined 6-for-12 performance, while Perry Rogan and Neal White had a combined four RBI each for the Pioneers. UAV would send a combined five pitchers to the mound Friday, as Bobby Diaz and Mitch Stroski pitched Game #1 followed by a complete game performance in the middle game by Ayrton Costa. In the night cap, D.J. Sterling and Angel Navarro combined on the victory for Antelope Valley.

GAME #1 — ANTELOPE VALLEY 5, CORBAN 2 (10 INNINGS)

Friday's opener would begin with Antelope Valley scoring in the top of the first inning when Tremlin ripped a run-scoring single to left field that allowed Juan Reveles to score from third for an early 1-0 lead for the visiting Pioneers.

Corban would battle back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Legg reached on a fielding error by Antelope Valley before moving to third on a failed pickoff attempt by UAV. Immediately following Legg moving to third, Williams roped a RBI single through the left side that scored Legg tying the score at 1-1.

In the top of the sixth inning, Antelope Valley would retake the lead (2-1) on a single through the left side by Jose Reyes that scored Tremlin following his one-out single to right center.

Corban would tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Williams led off with a double to left field before being lifted for sophomore pinch runner Jake Kunkel. A sacrifice bunt by junior Lance Foster would move Kunkel to third before pinch hitter Romero ripped a one-out double to right center that tie the game at two-apiece. Despite allowing Romero to move to third on a single to left field by senior Matt Hamlin, Antelope Valley would not allowed the game-winning run on a comebacker to the mound that forced extra innings.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Antelope Valley broke the 2-2 tie in the top of the 10th inning when Luis Andrade and Reveles registered back-to-back singles putting runners at first and second with no outs. The Pioneers' next batter – Rogan – would step to the plate and after showing a sacrifice bunt attempt, UAV's third baseman took the third pitch that he saw and deposited it over the right field fence to a game-winning three-run home run that put Antelope Valley ahead by three runs (5-2). Corban would keep within striking distance despite allowing a double by Tremlin, as the Warriors' pitching and defense would keep UAV from adding any more runs to the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Corban could not muster any offense going down 1-2-3 en route to dropping the opener by the final margin of 5-2.

Williams and Foster each tallied two hits for Corban, while Williams and Romero drove in both of the Warriors' runs. McCaffrey got the start allowing one earned run on three hits in 4.0 innings of work before Virtue, Hull, and Storm combined to pitch the final 6.0 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits. Hull would suffer his first loss of the season, as he faced the eventual game-winning run before turning the ball over to Storm in the 10th inning.

Antelope Valley was led by Tremlin with a 4-for-5 performance, while Rogan drove in a team-high three runs. Diaz would take the ball to begin the game and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in 6.1 innings of work before Stroski earned his second win of the season after allowing just four hits in 3.2 innings of relief.

GAME #2 — CORBAN 4, ANTELOPE VALLEY 3

Corban would fight back in the bottom of the second inning, as junior Peter Martin led off with a single through the left side before Williams answered with a double to right center that advanced Martin to third. Immediately following Williams two-base hit, the elder Kunkel would put Corban ahead for the first time all day with a two-run scoring double down the left field line that scored Martin and Williams for a 2-1 Warrior lead. Two batters later, Johansen would bring Kunkel home on a RBI single to right field that handed Corban a two-run lead (3-1).

Antelope Valley would cut its deficit in half (3-2) with a run in the top of the third inning, as Tremlin ripped a run-scoring double to left center that scored White after he pinch-ran for Rogan.

In the top of the fifth inning, Antelope Valley would tie the game at 3-3 when Andrade scored on a double play by Corban with the bases loaded. Andrade would reach base via a lead off walk before moving to third on a throwing error by the Warriors and coming home one batter later.

Not wanting to play extra innings, Corban struck with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Williams roped a two-out double to left center before being pulled for a pinch-runner. The elder Kunkel would then bring home his little brother, Jake, with a run-scoring single through the left side, as the younger Kunkel beat the throw from UAV's left fielder for the eventual game-winning run that put the host Warriors ahead by the score of 4-3.

In the top of the seventh inning, Antelope Valley would have its bats quieted by Corban's pitching staff as Johansen earned the win by getting the Pioneers in order for the one-run victory (4-3).

Johansen, Williams, and the elder Kunkel would each collect two hits, while Kunkel drove in 75% (3-of-4) of Corban's runs. Thiessen would get his first collegiate start allowing two earned runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of work to go along with a game-high six strikeouts, while Shumka, Hull, and Johansen combined to allow one unearned run on two hits over the final 4.0 innings.

Antelope Valley was led offensively by five different Pioneers that collected a hit each, while Costa went the distance allowing four earned runs on seven hits en route to suffering his first loss of the season.
