FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Sophomore
Marc Gallegos was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, two runs batted in, two steals, and one run scored, as Corban's baseball team defeated Pacific, 8-4, Wednesday at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
Corban (16-9) built a 6-0 lead after 5½ inning before holding on for the four-run victory over the NCAA Division III member Boxers. Along with Gallegos, senior
Kyle Kunkel and junior
Nate Williams also registered three hits each to go along with a two-hit night by junior
Peter Martin.
On the mound, junior
Justin White got the start allowing a mere one hit in 3.0 innings of work before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Senior
David Hull would be the Warriors' first reliever, as he allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings of work en route to picking up his second win of the season. The trio of freshman
Justin Knoll, senior
Caleb Virtue, and sophomore
Jordan Johansen would combine to allow four runs (three earned) on five hits in 4.0 innings of work, as Virtue struck out a game-high three batters in 2.2 innings of work for Corban.
Corban would begin the game's scoring in the top of the second inning when Williams drew a lead off walk before advanding to third on Martin's double to right field. Johansen would bring home the game's opening run on a ground out to shortstop that allowed Williams to score before a double down the right field line by Kunkel would plate Martin for a 2-0 Warrior lead. One batter later, Gallegos would double to left center allowing Kunkel to score giving the visiting team a three-run lead (3-0).
In the top of the fifth inning, Corban would add two more runs to the scoreboard thanks to RBIs by senior
Derek Legg and Williams. Legg would bring home Gallegos on a ground out after the sophomore infielder reached on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. One batter later, Williams drove home junior
Gregg Romero on a double to right field to give Corban a five-run lead (5-0).
Gallegos would drive in the Warriors' sixth run of the night with a two-out double to right center in the top of the sixth inning that allowed Kunkel to score following his one-out single to center field that handed Corban a commanding six-run lead (6-0).
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Pacific cut its deficit in half with three runs as Grant Rogers reached on a single that allowed Anson Arakaki to score after he pinch ran for Kyle Treadway. One batter later, Mike Thomson singled down the left field line with the bases loaded to score Austin Gallagher to score the Boxers' second run of the game. Immediately following Thomson's hit, Ben Duerr registered an infield single that allowed Rogers to score and pulled Pacific within three runs (6-3).
Corban would score another run in the top of the seventh inning when after Legg was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then came around to score on a RBI single to left field by Williams that put the visiting Warriors ahead by four runs (7-3).
In the top of the ninth inning, Corban would add its eighth and final run on another run-scoring single by Williams that allowed freshman pinch-hitter
Landon Frost to score from second following his one-out single for a maring of five runs (8-3).
Pacific would score the game's final run in the bottom of the ninth inning when JT Francies reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Duerr to score the Boxers' fourth and final run for the final margin of 8-4.
Pacific (4-12) was led offensively by Duerr and Therone Bridges with two hits each, while Jimmy Brakebush allowed three earned runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work en route to suffering his second loss of the season. The Boxers would use six relievers led by Nick Morton's 2.0 innings of work immediately following Brakebush.
Corban will return to the field on Saturday, March 23rd, against fellow NAIA West member Oregon Tech in an afternoon double header beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Kiger Stadium in Klamath Falls.
