KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – After being caught in a pitcher's dual in the opener, Corban's baseball team exploded for 10 runs on 13 hits in the finale en route to earning a double header split with Oregon Tech, 0-2 & 10-5, Saturday at Kiger Stadium.
Corban (17-10, 5-5 NAIA West) was led offensively by senior
Derek Legg with a combined four hits, while junior
Peter Martin and sophomore
Marc Gallegos added three hits each that included Gallegos' first home run of the season in Game #2. Three other Warriors – junior
Nate Williams, sophomore
Jordan Johansen, and freshman
Steven Kha – tallied two hits each, while Gallegos and Williams drove in three runs apiece.
Senior
Jamie McCaffrey went the opening 7.0 innings in the opener allowing two earned runs on four hits before turning the ball over to fellow senior
Caleb Virtue for the final three outs. In Game #2, senior
Jacob Kopra went the opening 8.0 innings allowing three runs (one earned) on nine hits with fellow senior
David Hull allowing two earned runs on three hits in the final inning.
Oregon Tech (9-20, 2-8 NAIA West) got a combined six hits from Dylan Rogers that included a 4-for-5 performance in the finale, while Aaron Bocchi registered a combined three hits on the afternoon.
Chase Meister would get the start for the Owls in Game #1 allowing six hits in 8.1 innings of work before Raf Belloc got the final two outs en route to registering his first save of the season. In the finale, Craig Kathol would allow five earned runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings of work before a quartet of Owl relievers – PJ Vanemmerik, Belloc, Kendyll Garvin, and Dustin Schnieder – allowing a combined five runs (four earned) on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.
GAME #1 — OREGON TECH 2, CORBAN 0
Saturday's opener would being as a pitcher's dual with neither team scoring until the bottom of the third inning when Dustin Norman roped a double to left field that allowed Brent Hegdahl to score following his leadoff infield single to put the host Owls ahead by the score of 1-0.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Oregon Tech would add another run when Ethan Schlecht belted a leadoff home run over the left field wall for a two-run lead (2-0) for the Owls.
Corban would have a chance to get on the board in the top of the eighth inning when Gallegos led off with a single to center field before moving to second on a single by Johansen. Legg would advance both runner ninty feet on a sacrifice bunt, but neither runner would advance beyond there thanks to timely defense by Oregon Tech despite the Warriors loading the bases with two outs.
Six different Warriors would register hits with Legg recording the highest average thanks to a 1-for-2 performance.
Oregon Tech was led offensively by Rogers with a 2-for-4 showing, as Schlecht and Norman drove in both of the Owls' runs.
GAME #2 — CORBAN 10, OREGON TECH 5
After watching a pitcher's dual and low-scoring game in the opener, both teams combined for 15 runs on 25 hits in the finale.
Oregon Tech would begin the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Schlecht led off with a double to right field before moving to third one batter later on a sacrifice bunt. Alex Antonaras would bring home Schlecht on a ground out to second base to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, Corban would finally get on the board earning a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs via Gallegos' two-out, two-run home run over the left field fence that also scored sophomore
Jake Kunkel after he pinch ran for Kha earlier.
Oregon Tech would retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Owls scored two runs on a run-scoring single by Rogers that scored Jared Nelson after he reached on a fielding error by the Warriors. One batter later, Alex Reynolds would come home on a wild pitch to give OIT a one-run lead (3-2).
In the top of the sixth inning, Corban would tie the game when Williams belted his team-leading second home run of the season via a one-run blast that knotted the contest at 3-3.
One inning later, Corban's offense would erupt for five runs with Gallegos bringing home Kha on a RBI single followed by a run-scoring fielder's choice by Legg that plated Gallegos. Williams would step to the plate next and ripped a two-run double that scored Legg and freshman
Landon Frost before Martin roped a single to left field one batter later to score Williams and handed the visiting Warriors a five-run lead (8-3).
In the top of the eighth inning, Corban would add to its lead when Gallegos reached on a fielding error by OIT that allowed senior
Kyle Kunkel to score from third giving the Warriors a 9-3 lead.
Corban would added its 10th and final run in the top of the ninth inning when Martin roped a two-run single that scored senior
Matt Hamlin, as the visiting Warriors took a seven-run lead (10-3).
Oregon Tech would score the game's final two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning when Rogers registered a run-scoring single followed by a RBI double by Ryan Hayden that plated Rogers for the final score of 10-5.
Legg would lead Corban's offense with a 3-for-5 performance, while four other Warriors – Gallegos, Williams, Martin, and Kha – tallied two hits each in the win.
Oregon Tech would get a 4-for-5 showing from Rogers, while Hayden and Bocchi registered two hits each for the Owls.
Both teams will return to the diamond tomorrow – Sunday, March 24th – in a late-morning double header beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Kiger Stadium in Klamath Falls.
