Three Warriors Tally Hits in Loss to Rival Willamette

KEIZER, Ore. – In a non-league game against cross town rival and NCAA Division III member Willamette, Corban's baseball team was held to just three hits in an 11-1 loss to the Bearcats Wednesday at Volcanoes Stadium.

Corban (25-20) was led by the senior trio of Jeremiah Forrister, Matt Hamlin, and Kyle Kunkel with a hit each, while Kunkel drove in the Warriors' lone run of the night with a RBI ground out in the eighth inning.

Freshman Ransom Storm would get the start for Corban allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit in 3.0 innings of work en route to suffering his first loss of the season. The relief combination of junior Justin White, senior David Hull, freshman Adam Shumka, freshman Justin Knoll, and sophomore Bryce Watterud would combine to allow nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits.

Willamette (15-18) was led offensively by Hunter Gallant and Tiras Koon with three hits each, as the duo along with Brad Breier combined to drive in 10 of the Bearcats' 11 runs.

Albert Garcia would pitch the opening 4.0 innings for Willamette, as he allowed just two hits before turning the ball over the a quartet of relievers – Jackson Watt, Peter Davis, Jordan Ramp, and Nate Balk – for the final 5.0 innings.

Over the opening sixth innings, Willamette would score 11 unanswered runs with Austin Hagarty driving in the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning that allowed Ben Petersen to score.

Corban would finally get on the board in the top of the eighth inning when sophomore Jake Kunkel reached on a Bearcat error to leadoff the inning before moving to second in a walk by freshman Robert Quezada. Freshman Conner Locke would move Kunkel over to third on a fielder's choice before the elder Kunkel drove in Corban's lone run on a ground out to third that allowed the younger Kunkel to score to make the final score 11-1 in favor of the home Bearcats.

Following tonight's non-league game, Corban will return to the diamond on Friday, April 19th, to begin the Warriors' final NAIA West series of the season against Simpson in a double header that is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
