SALEM, Ore. – In a mid-week, non-conference game, Corban's baseball team scored the final eight runs en route to picking up a win over cross town rival Willamette, 12-5, Tuesday afternoon on John Lewis Field at Spec Keene Stadium.
Corban (22-13) was led offensively by junior
Nate Williams with a 3-for-6 performance that included three runs scored, while three other Warriors – junior
Lance Foster, sophomore
Jordan Johansen, and freshman
Landon Frost – registered two hits each. Foster, junior
William Koenig, and freshman
Lathan Alger all drove in two runs for the Warriors, while Frost was the only other Corban player to score more than two runs.
Sophomore
Andy Thiessen got his second straight non-conference start allowing four earned runs on two hits in 2.0 innings of work before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Freshman
Adam Shumka would pitch the next inning allowing one earned run on two hits before senior
David Hull went the next 4.0 innings allowing just one hit en route to picking up his third win of the season. Freshman
Ransom Storm and Johansen would combined to record the final six out, as the Warriors picked up their fifth win in the past six games.
Willamette (11-17) got two hits each from Hunter Gallant and Ben Petersen, while Petersen and Andrew Wilson drove in two runs each for the host Bearcats. Evan Giddings would get the start for Willamette allowing three earned runs on two hits in just 0.1 innings of work before a quartet of Bearcat relievers – Jackson Watt, Zach Holcomb, Henry Harrison, and Garrett Davis – combined to allow nine runs (five earned) on nine hits over the final 8.2 innings with Holcomb suffering the loss.
Corban would get on the board in the top of the first inning thanks to back-to-back-to-back walks with the bases loaded, as the visiting Warriors grabbed a three-run lead (3-0) after their first at-bat.
Willamette would come back with four runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a single through the left side by Petersen following by a two-run double down the left field line by Wilson before Brandon Chinn lifted a sacrifice fly into right center to give the host Bearcats a one-run lead (4-3).
In the top of the third inning, Corban would tie the game once again at 4-4 when Williams scored on a wild pitch.
A Petersen single into center field would plate Willamette's final run of the day, as the Bearcats retook the lead by a single run (5-4) in the bottom of the third inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, senior
Derek Legg would lift a sacrifice fly to deep right field allowing Frost to come home as the visiting Warriors tied the game for the third and final time at 5-5.
One inning later, senior
Jeremiah Forrister would score the eventual game-winning run on a throwing error by Willamette on a stolen base by Frost that was followed four batters later by a bases loaded walk by Foster that scored Frost and gave the Warriors a two-run lead (7-5).
In the top of the eighth inning, Corban would erupt for five runs with the Warriors beginning the scoring on a fielding error by Willamette with the bases loaded before Koenig ripped a two-run single up the middle. A run-scoring ground out by Frost followed by the Bearcats' seventh and final error would close out the game's scoring, as Corban settled for a seven-run victory (12-5).
Corban will return to the diamond on Friday, April 5th, in a NAIA West double header against Menlo beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Atherton, California.
