BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – On
Senior Recognition Day, Corban's baseball team closed out the regular season against NCAA Division III member and No. 25-ranked George Fox falling by the final score of 5-0 despite solid pitching by a quartet of seniors Saturday on Warrior Field.
Corban (29-22) was led offensively by junior
Gregg Romero with a pair of hits, while senior
Matt Hamlin and junior
William Koenig added the only other hits for the Warriors. Senior
Jacob Kopra got the start for Corban allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in 3.0 innings of work en route to suffering his fifth loss of the season, while the senior trio of
Jamie McCaffrey,
Caleb Virtue, and
David Hull combined to allow three runs (two earned) on six hits in a combined 6.0 innings on the mound.
George Fox (26-12) was led at the plate by Timothy Williams with three hits, while Derek Dixon drove in a game-high two runs for the Bruins. Tom Zarosinski went the opening 8.0 innings for GFU allowing just four hits to go along with a game-high 10 strikeouts before Alex Keenan got the game's final three out to preserve the victory.
In the top of the second inning, George Fox would get the scoring started Zac Israel doubled to right field scoring Zach Miller with the eventual game-winning run. The Bruins would add to their lead extending the margin to two runs (2-0) when Israel scored on a pass ball one batter later.
After being held without a hit over the opening four innings, Hamlin led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single to right field before Romero added the Warriors' second hit of the at-bat two batters later that advanced senior
Alex Bost to third after he reached base via a fielder's choice.
Unfortunately that would be as close as Corban would come all day to scoring, as the host Warriors did not advance a runner past first base the remainder of the game.
Four innings later, George Fox would add another run to the scoreboard when Dixon brought home Williams on a ground out to third base extending the Bruins' lead to three runs (3-0).
In the top of the seventh inning, George Fox pushed its lead to four runs (4-0) when Israel scored on a wild pitch after Chase struck out swinging before advancing to first on the pass ball.
Dixon would cap the game's scoring in the top of the eighth inning when he ripped a double down the left field line that scored Williams, as the Bruins settled for the five-run victory (5-0) to close out its season as well.
Corban will now turn its attention to the NAIA West Tournament that begins on Wednesday, May 1st, at Porter Park on the campus of Concordia University in Portland. The Warriors will enter the tournament as the No. 3-seed and will take on No. 2-seeded Menlo in the second game at a time to be determined.
