Chaney Scores Second-Half Goal to Lead Corban Men’s Soccer Past Concordia, 1-0

BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior forward Derik Chaney (Helena, Mont.) scored one of the biggest goals of his Corban University career on Wednesday evening, finding the back of the net in the second half to lead the men's soccer team past first place Concordia University, 1-0.  For the Warriors, it was their third-consecutive Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) win and second road victory in the past eight days.

This win marks the first time Corban has defeated Concordia on the road in nearly eight years, with the last road victory against the Cavaliers coming on October 12, 2006.

After stumbling in its first match of the CCC campaign and then tying the second game of conference play, Corban has turned things around drastically, scoring nine goals in the past three matches en route to the three triumphs.  Wednesday's game also marks the third-straight contest in which the Warrior defense and senior goalkeeper Steven Mason (Santa Rosa, Calif.) have recorded a shutout.

The first stanza saw both sides garner some quality opportunities, with Concordia notching the first look at goal with a hard shot to the right side, but Mason was there to make the diving stop.  Corban fired a couple of shots on frame later in the half, and the Cavalier goalkeeper, Mitch McCaw, came up with a sprawling save to keep the Warriors off of the scoreboard.

At the halftime break, Corban led Concordia in shots, 8-4, while also edging the Cavaliers in corner kicks during the first 45 minutes, 3-2.

In the second stanza, the Navy and Gold came out firing, generating a few opportunities early on.  Senior defender Daniel Fredrickson (Boise, Idaho) made his way forward and almost got on the end of an opportunity, but his right-footed volley just sailed over the crossbar, keeping the score level at 0-0.

The game-winning play came in the 63rd minute when senior forward Arsinio Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) made a run down the right side and got to the end-line, and in doing so, drew a number of defenders to him.  Walker was then able to cut the ball back at a 45-degree angle to an oncoming Chaney who buried his right-footed shot into the back of the net to give Corban the one-goal advantage.  For Chaney, it was his first score of the year, and for Walker, his first assist during the 2014 campaign.

From that point on Corban played solid defensively while continuing to accumulate quality looks at goal.  Late in the match sophomore midfielder Quamie Dinnall (May Pen, Jamaica) ripped a left-footed rocket that just missed the right post, keeping the score at 1-0.

Mason came up big late in the contest when he saved a Concordia (5-3-0, 4-1-0 CCC) header that was on frame, keeping the Warriors in front.  That is how the match would end, with the Warriors winning on the road at Concordia for the first time in nearly eight years.

After the triumph, Chaney talked about his goal and the importance of the win in a post-match interview:

On the evening, Corban outshot Concordia, 20-8, with Chaney leading the way with six shots.  In addition to Chaney's offensive presence, Dinnall and senior midfielder Eliseo Santana (Idaho Falls, Idaho) both recorded three shots on the evening.

"Today's win was a complete team performance on both sides of the ball," stated head coach Aaron Lewis.  "Earning our third win in a row tonight against a national caliber opponent solidifies the momentum the team has generated.  We'll look to use that momentum now heading into an important stretch of games."

Corban (5-3-1, 3-1-1 CCC) returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, for a matchup with the Knights of Warner Pacific College at Warrior Field.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
