In his debut with the Warriors, junior Daniel Orr nearly hit for the cycle in the opener going 3-for-4 with a single, double, and triple en route to helping Corban earn a season-opening split with Whitman on Saturday.

Orr Helps Warriors to Opening Day Split with D-III Whitman

WILSONVILLE, Ore. – Junior Daniel Orr was a combined 4-for-8 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI, as Corban's baseball team opened the 2014 season with a double header split against NCAA Division III member Whitman, 4-1 & 8-10, Saturday on the varsity field at Wilsonville High School.

Corban (1-1) also got multiple hits performances from junior Hayden Calvert, junior Marc Gallegos, junior Ben Straka, junior Jordan Johansen, and sophomore Lathan Alger. Gallegos would score a pair of runs in each game to go along with two stolen bases, while Calvert drove in a combined four RBI to go along with a run scored.

For Whitman (1-1), Paul Heywood was a combined 4-for-8 in the double header with MacLean Harned going a perfect 4-for-4 in the finale.

GAME #1 – CORBAN 4, WHITMAN 1

In the opener, senior Jacob Kopra took the mound to start the season allowing only one earned run on a pair of hits in 4.0 innings before turning the ball over to a pair of relievers – freshman Daniel Aranda and sophomore Daniel Gober – for the final five combined innings. Aranda would pick up his first collegiate victory in relief, while Gober earned the save.

Corban would get on the board first when Gallegos led off the bottom of the first inning with a single through the left side before stealing second and third. With one out and a runner ninety feet from home, Orr roped a double to left field that scored Gallegos and put the home team ahead by the score of 1-0.

Whitman would come back in the top of the second inning to even the game at 1-1 on a Kyle Buckham single up the middle with the bases loaded that scored Ozzy Braff, who led off the at-bat with a single back to the pitcher.

In the bottom of the third inning, Orr would rip a one-out triple down the right field line before coming home with the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field by senior Peter Martin that handed Corban a 2-1 lead.

Neither team would score again until the bottom of the fifth inning when Corban added an insurance run pushing the score to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly to center field by Calvert that brought Gallegos home following his leadoff double down the left field line.

Two innings later, Calvert brought home the Warriors' final run of the game making the score 4-1 in favor of Corban on a double down the left field line that scored junior Scott Dreier after he reached on a throwing error by Whitman at the beginning of the at-bat.

In the game, Orr went 3-for-4 missing the cycle by a home run with Gallegos and Johansen also providing a multiple hit game with two hits each. Calvert drove in a pair of runs for the Warriors, while Gallegos stole a pair of bases. Kopra struck out a game-high two batters for the Warriors in his season opener.

For Whitman, three players – Buckham, Braff, and Heywood – each registered a hit for the Missionaries. Will Thompson suffered the loss for Whitman allowing three earned runs on six hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts before turning the ball over to reliever Sterling Spilinek for the final 2.0 innings.

GAME #2 – WHITMAN 10, CORBAN 8

In the finale, Whitman would score five unanswered runs on one hit over the opening two innings that resulted in a 5-0 lead for the visiting Missionaries before Corban finally got on the board.

The host Warriors would trim Whitman's lead to four runs (5-1) in the bottom of the second inning when junior Eli Driessen and Johansen executed a perfect double steal that allowed Johansen to score Corban's first run of the game.

Unfortunately, Whitman would answer back with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning that increased the Missionaries' lead to 7-1 on a balk that scored Peter Carmichael from third.

In the bottom of the third inning, Corban scored three runs on a fielder's choice RBI by Orr, a run-scoring single to center field by Calvert, and a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home Orr and pulled the Warriors within three runs (7-4).

Unfortunately, Whitman would added another run on the board in the top of the fourth inning extending its advantage to seven runs (8-1).

Corban would answer back with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, as a Driessen single to left field scored Calvert followed by an Orr sacrifice fly that plated Straka and pulled the Warriors within two runs (8-6).

That would be as close as Corban would get, as Whitman added its final two runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run double down the left field line by Heywood that pushed the Missionaries' lead to 10-6.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Corban scored its final two runs of the game on another fielder's choice RBI by Orr and a run-scoring ground out by Calvert for the final score of 10-8 in favor of the visiting team.

Alger led the Warriors' offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while junior Austin Guzzon suffered the loss allowing five runs (three earned) on one hit in 1.1 innings of work.

Heywood led the Missionaries' bat-attack with a perfect 4-for-4 performance, while Robert Maislin earned the win in relief.

Corban will return to the diamond on Sunday, February 9th, in a pair of back-to-back games against Lewis & Clark and Pacific beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium in Hillsboro.
