Warriors Defeat No. 22 San Diego Christian to Start Golden State Tour

BOX SCORE EL CAJON, Calif. – Sunshine and 70 degrees greeted Corban University in its California trip opener and the visitors enjoyed with a 5-2 triumph over No. 22-ranked San Diego Christian College on Wednesday.

Marc Gallegos and Tyler Bennett had three hits apiece as the Warriors (2-1) collected 13 on the day.  Jacob Kopra and Daniel Aranda combined to hold the Hawks (10-3) to four hits.

Corban struck first in the fourth inning when Stockton Taylor singled with two outs and ultimately scored on a passed ball.  In the fifth, Gallegos singled and stole second before Daniel Orr drove him home with a base hit to make it 2-0.

San Diego Christian broke through on Kopra in the bottom of the inning when leadoff hitter Cade Gotta homered to left.  The Hawks evened the score, 2-2, in the seventh picking up an unearned run off Aranda who started the inning in relief.

Taylor singled to lead off the eighth for Corban and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bennett.  After a groundout and hit batter, pinch-hitter Landon Frost delivered a base hit for the game-winner.

The Warriors added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth.  With one out, back-to-back doubles by Orr and Hayden Calvert made the score 4-2.  Calvert crossed the plate with the final run on a single by Bennett.

Aranda set down the Hawks in the bottom of the ninth and notched the win.  Kopra tossed a solid six innings without the decision, striking out four while allowing just three hits and a lone walk.

"The kids responded well today for being the first game of the road trip and having not been on the field for nearly a week because of the weather," said head coach Jeff McKay.  "We beat a good team that had been playing very well.  Kopra and Aranda really went after their hitters and we got some clutch hitting.  Frost's two-out RBI pinch hit single was the key."

Corban continues play on Thursday versus Westmont College at 2 pm in Santa Barbara.
