College of Idaho Uses Long Ball in Win Over Corban

BOX SCORE SALEM, Ore. – College of Idaho built a 27-point second half lead and cruised to a 76-62 victory over Corban University in women's Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Saturday.
 
The Coyotes (14-10, 11-5 CCC), winners of four in a row, made 12-of-24 from 3-point range and was led by Erica Martinez with four triples and 22 points.  Chakala Carthen delivered a double-double scoring 14 and grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds.
 
Tara Vanweerdhuizen tallied 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Warriors (12-16, 7-9 CCC) who will now be on the road for the opening round of the conference tournament.
 
College of Idaho connected on 41 percent (26-64) from the field overall and forced 17 turnovers defensively.  Aleah Lowber and Dayna Drager also scored in double figures with 15 and 11 points respectively, each hitting three from long range.  Elisha Hensey had a game-high seven assists.
 
Julia Young scored 12 points for Corban and Sadie Pilgrim had 11 points and nine rebounds.  Jade Lowery issued six assists.  The Warriors outshot the Coyotes from the field at 48 percent (26-54) but could not overcome their turnovers and their opponent's hot outside shooting.
 
In the first half Corban used a 9-0 run to take an early 11-5 lead.  College of Idaho responded with some full court pressure and a barrage of 3-pointers to race to a 17-point advantage before going to intermission on top, 37-22.  The Coyotes came out of the break and outscored the Warriors 20-8 to claim the biggest lead of the night, 57-30.  Down by 27, Corban came back with a 15-1 run, but would get no closer than 10 points.
 
"I appreciate the effort the ladies made," said Warriors head coach Dave Bale.  "We didn't quit and worked hard to come back in the second half.  Kelli Christenson made some key shots for us in the second half."
 
Both teams conclude the regular season conference slate next week.  Corban travels to Warner Pacific on Tuesday and hosts Northwest Christian on Saturday.  College of Idaho entertains Evergreen on Friday and Northwest on Saturday.
