Corban Baseball Splits Games at CCC-NWC Challenge

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 PORTLAND – Clutch hitting, something missing in the Saturday's first game, was the difference in the second game as Corban split two contests in the CCC-NWC Challenge at Concordia University's Porter Park.

Despite out-hitting its opponent, Corban lost the opening game to Willamette, 1-0, that before a 13-hit attack made the difference in an 8-2 victory over Puget Sound. As a result of the split, the Warriors see their record go to 4-6. They finish the four-game tournament at 2 p.m. Sunday with a contest against Pacific Lutheran at Porter Park.

WILLAMETTE 1, CORBAN 0

The Bearcats managed just two hits in the game but scored the only run in the top of the ninth inning, making the most of a walk, single, balk and steal to put a runner on third base, from where he scored on a wild pitch.

Corban struggled to put men in scoring position throughout the game, getting three to second base and one to third base before almost tying the game in the bottom of the ninth. A hit batter, walk and throwing error put a runner on third, but a base-running mistake led to the lead runner getting retired for the first out. With the tying run on second, Willamette finished the game with a double play.

Rilyn Lewchuk, a freshman right hander, had a brilliant pitching debut for Corban, allowing no hits while striking out six and walking two in five innings of work. He retired the first six batters he face, three by strikeout, and the only base runners he allowed came on walks in the third and fifth innings.

"It was a tough loss for us. We wasted an outstanding effort by Rilyn Lewchuk with five no-hit innings in his collegiate debut," Corban head coach Jeff McKay said.

Daniel Gober allowed just one hit in three innings of relief work before Tyler Bennett took the loss in the ninth.

Ryan Rosas had a pair of singles to lead Corban's seven hit attack.

CORBAN 8, PUGET SOUND 2

The Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead before allowing the Loggers a run in the fifth inning on the way to the victory.

A Puget Sound error, a double by Marc Gallegos and a two-run double to left field by Daniel Orr netted the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the first inning. They added three unearned runs in the third, making the most of four hits and an error. The rally started with two outs and featured RBI singles by Davis Alderman, Jackson Smith and Jordan Johansen.

The Warriors made it 7-0 in the top of the fifth inning as Smith and Johansen again contributed run-scoring singles. Corban scored its final run in the eighth inning on Orr's sacrifice fly.

Orr and Johansen both had two hits and three RBI, Smith added two hits and two RBI, and Alderman and Stockton Taylor contributed a pair of hits.

Austin Guzzon went the first five innings to get the win, allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking six. Adam Shumka and Micah Ropp each worked two innings to finish it up.

"We responded well in game two with clutch hitting and another solid pitching performance," McKay said. "Daniel Orr continues to swing the bat well and it was nice to see freshman catcher Jackson Smith with two hits and two RBI."
