BOX SCORE PORTLAND –
Jacob Kopra pitched two-hit baseball through six innings and
Daniel Orr hit two triples and drove in two runs on Sunday afternoon as Corban defeated Pacific Lutheran, 4-2, at the CCC-NWC Challenge hosted by Concordia University.
The Warriors won three out of four games at the Challenge to improve their season record to 5-6. With the loss, PLU drops to 5-3 this season.
Kopra, Corban's ace right-hander, allowed two runs on two hits while walking three and striking out four in his six innings of work. The win was his first decision of the season to go along with a save earned in Friday night's 6-5 victory over NCAA Division III No. 1-ranked Linfield.
Daniel Aranda struck out one batter in a perfect seventh inning, and
Tony Davidson picked up his first save of the season by striking out four of the six batters he faced over the eighth and ninth innings.
Orr continued his impressive hitting, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in.
He got the Warriors on the scoreboard in the second inning when he led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Tyler Bennett, and then scored on a single to center field by
Davis Alderman.
The left-handed hitting Orr provided the big blow as Corban blew the game open with three runs, all unearned, in the top of the fifth.
Jordan Johansen reached base on an error, advanced on
Landon Frost's sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a single by
Stockton Taylor. Orr followed with a two-out, two-run triple down the right field line, and he came home on Bennett's base hit.
Orr collected his second triple and third hit of the game with two out in the seventh inning.
Pacific Lutheran scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings against Kopra, and that's when Corban head coach
Jeff McKay went to his bullpen for Aranda, followed by Davidson.
Corban finished with nine hits, three from Orr and two apiece from
Marc Gallegos and Alderman.
The Warriors dominated statistically in their four CCC-NWC Challenge games, finishing with more runs (18 to 10), hits (34 to 17) and extra base hits (12 to 7). Orr was 7-for-18 with three doubles, three triples, three runs scored and six RBI in the four games. The pitching staff limited their opponents to a .140 batting average and registered 29 strikeouts in 36 innings.
"This was another good win against a good team," McKay said. "The team is beginning to come together. We are getting our pitching developing and refining our defense."
Next up for the Warriors is a three-game home series against Oregon Tech, with the teams slated to play a single game starting at 3 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
