A Tale of Two Games: Corban Splits Doubleheader with Oregon Tech

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 ADAIR VILLAGE – It was a tale of two very different games on Friday afternoon as Corban and Oregon Tech split a baseball doubleheader played at Santiam Christian High School. Visiting Oregon Tech won the first contest, 12-0 in seven innings, followed by the Warriors taking a 10-6 decision in the second.

Following the doubleheader split, Corban is now 6-7 for the season, while Oregon Tech is 5-11.

The two teams play another twinbill at SCHS starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

OREGON TECH 12, CORBAN 0 (Box Score)

The Owls collected a total of 11 hits and took advantage of four Corban errors – three coming in the first inning – in support of starting pitcher Austin Taylor, who limited the Warriors to four hits in six innings of work to improve his record to 2-2.

Corban was its own worst enemy in the first inning, committing three errors that led to four unearned runs. Among the three hits in the inning were Spencer Reed's opposite-field flare double to drive in one run, and Colton Minton's fly ball that somehow found a spot in right-center field for another RBI double.

The Owls added a run in the third on a single by Ethan Schlecht, Reed's wind-blown double, and a suicide squeeze bunt by Minton, and they put the game away with six runs in the sixth inning. Josh DeVaughn bunted in a run and Tyson Dahl drove in another with a sacrifice fly before Aaron Bocchi hit a grand slam home run over the right field fence.

Oregon Tech's final run came on Minton's solo home run in the seventh inning.

In addition to allowing just the four hits, Taylor struck out two and walked three for Oregon Tech. Kendyll Garvin pitched the final inning in mop up work.

Corban finished the game with five hits, two coming off the bat of Ryan Rosas. For the Owls, Minton was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Schlecht, Reed and Ryan Hayden all had a pair of hits.

CORBAN 10, OREGON TECH 6 (Box Score)

This time, it was the Warriors who got off to a quick start in support of an outstanding starting pitching performance.

After allowing a first inning run, Corban right-hander Daniel Gober was sharp over five innings. He allowed the one run on four hits while fanning four and walking three to pick up his first victory of the season. A total of five pitcher saw action for the Warriors, including Tony Davidson, who recorded the final out after OIT rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Trailing 1-0, Corban scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. Landon Frost led off with a single and Marc Gallegos was hit by a pitch – the first of three times in the game – but those runners were still on base when Stockton Taylor stepped to the plate with two out. Taylor hit BJ Wilson's first pitch in left-center field to drive in Frost, and Tyler Bennett followed with a three-run homer over the fence in left-center.

The Warriors scored two runs in the third inning on a RBI double by Daniel Orr and a run-scoring infield hit by Bennett, and they continued to play add-on after that. After hits by Gregg Romero and Gallegos, Orr drove in his second run of the game with a base hit in the bottom of the sixth. They plated two more in the seventh on three hits, including Jordan Johansen's pinch hit two-run single through the middle, and the final run came home in the eighth on Taylor's RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Trailing 9-2 entering the ninth inning, Oregon Tech put up four runs, highlighted by Reed's three-run triple to left-center field.

Corban busted loose for 15 hits, including three apiece by Orr and Bennett and two each from Romero and Taylor. Oregon Tech starting pitcher Wilson took the brunt of the Corban offense, allowing six runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.
