Bejaran and Castronovo Go Deep in Season Opening Win

BOX SCORE REDDING, Calif. – Freshman Breonna Bejaran and senior Courtney Castronovo belted home runs in Corban University's 18-9 victory over William Jessup University to open the 2014 campaign.  Rain washed out Corban's other scheduled contests versus Biola and British Columbia in the Big League Dreams Tournament hosted by Simpson University.

In a steady rain the Warriors (1-0) tallied an unearned run in the first only to see William Jessup respond with five runs in the bottom of the inning.  A pair of defensive miscues aided the designated home team along with two hits and two walks issued by Corban starter Jessica Holsinger.

Corban drew even in the second, 5-5, scoring four times.  Aubrene Blas delivered a sacrifice fly followed by a two-run single by Bejaran and RBI base hit by Lounette Jackson.

The Warriors took the lead for good in the third plating five runs.  Blas drove home a run with a single and Bejaran clubbed a two-run homer.

Holsinger settled into the circle tossing back-to-back scoreless innings and Corban broke the game open with six runs in the fourth.  The big blow was a two-run blast over the fence by Castronovo.

William Jessup answered with a two-run homer of its own and trailed 16-7 after four innings.  Both teams plated a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to finish the scoring and give the Warriors the eight-run rule triumph.

"I was pleased with how we played offensively," said head coach Nathan Ohta.  "The girls came out and hit the ball extremely well.  Our pitchers and defense fought through some intense conditions, fighting a driving rain the entire game.  Overall, I was pleased with the first game.  It was a great team effort and everyone contributed in the win."

Holsinger pitched four innings to earn her first win as a Warrior, striking out four and allowing three earned runs.  She gave up four hits and walked five.  Samantha Gutwig threw the final inning in relief.

Corban tallied 10 hits and stole nine bases on the day.  Bejaran had two hits and five RBI.  Kyrianna Sorensen also added two hits.  Kylie Durre scored four runs and Shelby Mauermann plated three.

"Breonna (Bejaran) had an outstanding game today offensively and defensively," Ohta continued.  "She is an outstanding athlete and this is the type of performance she is capable of on a day in, day out basis."

Corban returns to action hosting University of British Columbia in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, February 18 starting at noon.
