Warriors Top Willamette in Non-League Baseball Action

BOX SCORE SALEM – Daniel Orr and Scott Dreier combined for five hits and four runs batted in Tuesday afternoon to lead Corban to a 6-4 non-conference baseball win over the visiting Willamette Bearcats at Warrior Field.

The Warriors are now 16-13 overall while the Bearcats drop to 13-10.

Orr and Dreier, hitting the the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the order, provided key run-scoring hits in Corban's three-run fifth inning that broke up a 2-2 tie.

Steven Kha, who finished with two hits, led off with a single against relief pitcher Garrett Davis, and pinch runner Ben Straka advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jon Mercer. After Marc Gallegos reached on an error, an infield pop fly left runners on the corners with two outs. Orr came through with a clutch two-run single to right field, and Dreier followed with an opposite-field RBI double down the right field line.

Dreier, who finished with three hits, got his other RBI on a single through the right side of the infield in the seventh inning. Jordan Johansen contributed a RBI single in the first inning and Benjamin Liogon plated the other Corban run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

The Warriors took a 6-3 lead entering the top of the ninth and then held on for the win.

Reliever Austin Reames, who retired Willamette in order in the eighth, fought control issues in the final inning to get his first save of the season. A pair of walks, a single and a fielder's choice ground out brought in a run and put the tying run on second base with two outs, but the left-handed freshman bore down and coaxed a game-ending ground out.

Reames was the final of five Corban pitchers to take the mound. He ended up allowing one run on one hit in 2 2/3 innings of work for his save. Daniel Gober, the third pitcher, allowed no runs and one single while pitching the fourth and fifth innings to improve his pitching record to 2-1.

Eli Driessen started and threw two innings, Jacob Kopra threw an inning, and Tyler Bennett went 1 1/3 innings in relief.

Orr finished with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI for the Warriors, who also had two-hit games from Ryan Rosas and Kha. Gallegos and Orr both scored twice for Corban.

Willamette finished with just five hits, with Tommy Kawamura and Tiras Koon both getting two and scoring a run. Albert Davis allowed two runs on seven hits in four innings, and after Davis threw two innings, Jackson Watt finished for the Bearcats, allowing one unearned run on two hits in two innings.

Corban plays a non-league game at Pacific on Wednesday, first pitch slated for 5 p.m., and then returns to league action this weekend with a four-game series at Concordia, starting with a nine-inning game beginning at 2 p.m. Friday.
