Kopra Improves to 6-0 as Corban, Concordia Split 1-0 Games

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 PORTLAND – If you're a fan of well-pitched baseball games, you would have truly enjoyed the doubleheader between the Corban Warriors and Concordia Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon at Porter Park.

Jacob Kopra won his sixth game of the season without a defeat as the Warriors pulled out a thrilling 1-0 victory in the opening game. The second contest was like the first, only it was the Cavaliers who came out on the top end of another 1-0 classic.

Corban is now 17-15 overall and 8-6 in the NAIA West, while Concordia is 18-11 overall and also 8-6 in league play.

CORBAN 1, CONCORDIA 0

Kopra, a senior right-hander, continues to dominate NAIA West opponents. He went eight shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks while striking out three. He finally tired in the eighth, allowing two singles, but on his 124th pitch of the game he coaxed a rally-killing comebacker to the mound for the final out.

In four league outings totaling 35 innings Kopra has allowed only two earned runs and 25 hits while walking just five and striking out 28. His league earned run average is 0.51.

Daniel Aranda, a left-handed freshman, came into the game in the bottom of the ninth and allowed a one-out walk, but nothing more, in earning his second save of the season.

Corban scored the game's only run in the third inning on only one hit, that being a leadoff single by Ryan Rosas. A fielder's choice and two walks loaded the bases for Scott Dreier, and he reached on a fielder's choice that scored Marc Gallegos.

That was it for the scoring as the duo of Kopra and Aranda for Corban and Jason Snodgrass for Concordia dominated both lineups.

"This was another special performance by Kopra," Corban head coach Jeff McKay said. "He didn't have his best stuff but showed what type of competitor he is. Rivalry conference road wins are huge."

CONCORDIA 1, CORBAN 0

The only run in this contest came with one out in the ninth inning on a bases-loaded single by Christian Lichtenthaler. Prior to that, Corban's Austin Guzzon and Concordia's Harrison McGhee were locked in yet another classic pitching duel.

Guzzon ended up going 6 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out eight. He was relieved by Micah Ropp, who ended up taking the loss while allowing just one hit and the game's only run in 1 2/3 innings. Aranda relieved Ropp in the bottom of the ninth and gave up two hits, including Lichtenthaler's game-winner.

McGhee was tough for the Cavaliers, allowing just four hits and four walks while fanning seven in eight innings. Austin Hadley pitched the ninth inning and got the win to improve his season record to 3-0.

The Warriors weren't without their chances, getting a runner to second base in both the third and fourth innings, and then leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.

Jackson Smith had two of Corban's five hits.

"We had our chances," McKay said. "Credit the Concordia pitchers for making good pitches in key spots. We need to do a better job with runners on and situational hitting. We can still win the series with a good overall team effort tomorrow."

The two teams wrap up the four-game NAIA West series with another doubleheader on Monday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Porter Park.
