BOX SCORE 2 REDDING, Calif. – Corban split a NAIA West baseball doubleheader with the host Simpson Red Hawks on Saturday, winning the first game 10-0 before dropping the nightcap, 4-1.
The Warriors came away with a 3-1 record in the opening weekend of NAIA West play and they are now 11-8 for the season. In salvaging the final game of the four-game series, Simpson won for the first time this season in 20 contests.
CORBAN 10, SIMPSON 0
After consecutive complete game shutouts from
Jacob Kopra and
Austin Guzzon on Friday, it was
Rilyn Lewchuk's turn for a strong outing. "
Rilyn Lewchuk gave us another quality start," Corban head coach
Jeff McKay said. The right-handed freshman gave up just two hits while striking out three in five innings of work.
Jordan Johansen threw scoreless innings and
Ryan Morgan finished up with one strikeout in one inning.
The Warriors scored three runs in the first inning and five more in the second to essentially put the game away. They scored the three first-inning runs on two hits and two errors, and got five runs on four hits in the second.
Stockton Taylor had a two-run single and
Ben Straka followed that with a two-run triple to highlight the big inning.
Landon Frost and Morgan both had a pair of hits, Taylor drove in three runners, and
Daniel Orr and Straka both had a pair of RBI. Corban finished the game with eight hits.
SIMPSON 4, CORBAN 1
The Warriors never got it going offensively against Simpson starter Garrett Greenshaw and reliever Cameron Imhoff. Greenshaw gave up one run on five hits in seven innings, and Imhoff earned the save with two innings of one-hit pitching.
Vince Gonzalez had a pair of hits for the Warriors and
Davis Alderman drove in their only run with a single in the fourth inning. That tied the score at the time, but the Red Hawks scored three runs against Corban starter
Daniel Gober in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.
"It was a very disappointing loss in game two," Corban head coach
Jeff McKay said. "We did not compete well. We did not respond well after having a good effort in game one."
He was pleased, he added, by the pitching and defense during the weekend. "Three shutouts in a row is a great effort by our pitching staff, and the defense was a big factor."
Corban hopes to play on its home field for the first time this season when it hosts Menlo in a four-game series starting with a single nine-inning game slated to start at 4 p.m. Thursday.
