BOX SCORE 2 SALEM – After seeing a lead slip away with two outs in the ninth inning of a 3-2 first-game defeat, Corban pounded out 11 hits to take a 6-2 win over visiting George Fox in a non-league doubleheader played Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.
With the split the Warriors are now 28-24 overall, while George Fox goes to 27-11.
GEORGE FOX 3, CORBAN 2Through the first eight innings the Bruins had managed just two hits against Corban pitchers
Jacob Kopra and
Tony Davidson. Kopra, Corban's ace, went the first five innings and allowed only two base runners, one on a single and other on a walk. Davidson, normally a starter who came on in planned relief to get in some innings, was equally effective as he allowed only one single in three innings.
Meanwhile, the Warriors posted single tallies in the first and third innings.
Landon Frost led off with a double against George Fox starter Tom Zarosinski, and two outs later he scored on a base hit by
Marc Gallegos. Two innings later Frost and Gallegos sandwiched singles around
Daniel Orr being hit by a pitch and Frost scored when
Ryan Rosas was plunked by a pitch.
Zarosinski went seven innings and eventually made way for Sam Morland, who pitched the eighth inning and ended up getting the victory when the Bruins scored their three runs in their last at bat.
The inning started innocently enough as reliever
Stockton Taylor retired the first two batters. A walk, followed by Derek Dixon's single, set the stage for a double by Josh Rapacz that just eluded the glove of left fielder
Gregg Romero. With the score tied at 2-2, a throwing error allowed Rapacz to score the winning run. Taylor took the hard-luck loss and is now 0-2 for the season.
Sean Eberhardt pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and earned his fourth save for the Bruins.
George Fox won despite managing only four hits, two of which were by Dixon. The Warriors finished with six hits, two each by Frost, Gallegos and Vince Gonzales.
CORBAN 6, GEORGE FOX 2After honoring departing seniors Kopra, Romero and catcher
William Koenig between games, the Warriors went to work and took the final game of the three-game set with George Fox.
Austin Guzzon went five innings and picked up the win, allowing just one run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Guzzon, the team's No. 2 starter, improved his season record to 6-4. Rilyn Lewchuck, another starter getting work, allowed a run in three innings and
Daniel Aranda closed the game, striking out the final batter looking with the bases loaded.
The Warriors got an unearned run in the second on Romero's sacrifice fly, and they added two more unearned runs on a single and two errors in the fifth.
Gallegos led off the sixth with a double and
Vince Gonzalez followed with a home run to left field in the seventh inning, and Gallegos drove in
Jon Mercer, who reached on a bunt single, with a sacrifice fly for the final run in the eighth.
Zac Israel hit a RBI single in the fourth and Danny Clifford hit a solo homer in the sixth for the Bruins' runs.
Clifford had a pair of George Fox's eight hits, while Gallegos, Gonzales and
Jackson Smith all had two hits for the Warriors.
Corban returns to action at 1 p.m. next Friday when it faces Concordia in the opening round of the NAIA West Grouping Tournament that will be hosted by the University of British Columbia.
