BOX SCORE VANCOUVER, B.C. - A two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the difference as Concordia defeated Corban, 4-2, ending the Warriors' season at the NAIA West Grouping Baseball Tournament at Thunderbird Park.
Corban finishes 2014 with a 29-26 record, one win shy of tying the program record for most wins set by the 2013 Warriors. Concordia, meanwhile, advances to the title game against tournament host British Columbia.
The Warriors got a solid pitching performance from
Tony Davidson, who nonetheless ended up taking the defeat. The left-handed sophomore, now 3-3 for the season, allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits. He walked four and struck out four.
After leaving three runners on base through the first two innings, Corban finally broke through against Concordia starter Blake Evetts for single runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third,
Landon Frost led off with a double and then scored on
Gregg Romero's single to right-center field. After Romero was caught stealing,
Marc Gallegos hit a single and stole second, but he was left stranded. An inning later,
Stockton Taylor drew a one-out walk, stole second and then scored on a Concordia error.
No one knew it at the time, but following the Gallegos single in the third inning, Corban would not get another hit against Evetts until an infield single by
Vince Gonzalez with two out in the eighth inning. Evetts retired 12 of 13 batters at one point, the only base runner coming when Gallegos was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning.
While the Warriors were being stymied on offense, the Cavaliers tied the game at 2-2 with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when, following a leadoff walk, a single and a sacrifice bunt, Cole Buruse hit a two-run single for the deciding runs. The teams then waited out a two-hour rain delay before
Adam Shumka came into the game for Davidson and got out of further trouble, keeping the score at 4-2.
Corban had one last opportunity in the top of the ninth but went down in order against Concordia closer Austin Hadley, who collected his fifth save of the season. Evetts improved his season record to 5-2 by allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits in eight innings of work.
Romero, a senior playing his final game, had two hits to lead Corban on offense. Two other seniors -
William Koenig and
Jacob Kopra - saw their final action for the Warriors. Kopra finished his season with a 10-0 record and, with 21 career victories, established that as a new record as well.
