SALEM, Ore. – During this time of the year, there is much holiday cheer. Families and friends gather at a time to celebrate so many things at Christmas and around the New Year. For the Corban University men's and women's basketball teams, the Warriors will celebrate by closing out 2015 and ushering in the New Year with five home doubleheaders during the next stretch of weeks leading into 2016.
The Warriors host four-straight Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) doubleheaders during the December 18 – December 31 time frame, and then another non-conference doubleheader at home on January 2. At a critical point in the year, these games should prove to be big in ultimately deciding much of the CCC standings and the race to qualify for the CCC Tournament.
The first two home CCC contests of the year bring Eastern Oregon University and the College of Idaho to town on Friday and Saturday.
For the Warrior women (4-6, 0-2 CCC), Corban will be looking to bounce back from a pair of CCC-opening losses to start the 2015-16 campaign when they host the Mountaineers on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. Corban will also be looking to defeat the Mountaineers for the first time in three tries after losing both times last year to EOU.
Saturday's contest against College of Idaho features two teams that split the season series last year. C of I holds the all-time series lead over Corban with 29 wins to just 18 for Corban, with last year's winner being the home team on both occasions.
Corban women's season stats
For the Corban men (5-3, 1-1 CCC), following a heartbreaking two-point defeat to No. 13 Southern Oregon in overtime, the Warriors bounced back in a big way the following day by taking down No. 7 Oregon Tech, 66-57. With the Mountaineer men coming to town on Friday evening, the Warriors will be looking to reverse last year's result in Salem in which EOU won by 11 points in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. Corban did bounce back and register a quality one-point win late in the year at EOU, but both teams will be looking for their second win of the 2015-16 CCC campaign after opening up 1-1.
On Saturday, the No. 18-ranked C of I Yotes come to town boasting a 7-4 overall record and a 2-0 mark in CCC play. Coming off of winning the CCC regular season championship and CCC Tournament championship during the 2014-15 season, and ultimately advancing all the way to the NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals, the Yotes have been testing themselves against some of the best competition in the NAIA this year and enter this weekend firing on all cylinders. C of I holds the all-time series lead over Corban with 50 wins to just 26 for the Warriors, and the Yotes have won the last six times these two teams have met.
Corban men's season stats
Following Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho, Corban then hosts Northwest Christian University on Tuesday, December 22, and Walla Walla University on December 31. One final doubleheader to cap off the Christmas break games includes a non-conference doubleheader with New Hope Christian College on January 2.
