Corban Baseball Splits with Bethesda in Southern California

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Corban University baseball team split with Bethesda University of California on Saturday, winning the first game of Saturday's doubleheader in extra innings, 5-1, while falling in the nightcap in a predetermined seven-inning contest, 6-2.

Highlights from the game one 10-inning thriller included a big extra-inning at the dish in which the Warriors scored four runs in the top of the 10th frame, sealing the four-run victory. Junior outfielder Hayden Calvert (Canberra, Australia) got things going with a double in the inning, and he eventually came in to score the game-winning run when senior outfielder Jordan Johansen (Black Diamond, Wash.) registered a sacrifice fly to give Corban the 2-1 lead.

Later in that all-important 10th, senior infielder Daniel Orr (Kingston, Wash.) notched an RBI single to right field, and then senior infielder Stockton Taylor (Brewster, Wash.) provided the dagger, ripping a single to right field, scoring two Warrior runners, leading to the 5-1 triumph.

In the game, junior pitcher Daniel Gober (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) went 7.2 innings in a no-decision, giving up six hits and just one run while striking out four. Junior pitcher Adam Shumka (White Rock, B.C.) came on in relief and earned the victory, throwing 2.1 innings while allowing no runs and no hits.

In the nightcap, junior outfielder Nic Coffman (Keizer, Ore.) provided the highlight of the game, blasting a 500-foot homerun over the right-field fence, but it was too little too late as the Warriors came up short in the four-run defeat. For the game, sophomore infielder Vince Gonzalez (Kennewick, Wash.) went 2-for-2 at the dish with one RBI, while Orr also tallied a pair of hits in the loss.

"We made some progress offensively today, but still have much more to improve upon," said head coach Jeff McKay. "The pitching and defense continues to be solid. We need to play well tomorrow on our last day and get home to get some good practices in. We are not where we need to be for this team yet this year, but we will get there. Nic Coffman gave us some good at-bats today, and he is beginning to get into the groove after joining the team late. Additionally, Daniel Gober gave us his second quality start in a row on the mound."

Corban (9-8) travels to Cal State University San Marcos tomorrow afternoon for the final game of its California road trip to take on the Cougars. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
