CALDWELL, Idaho – In the second match of a challenging Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) weekend road swing, the (RV) Corban University volleyball team stumbled in four sets to the No. 16-ranked College of Idaho Yotes on Saturday evening (25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 25-23).
"We struggled with passing and serving in the first two sets, which forced us to play out of system," said head coach Kim McLain. "In the third and fourth sets, we seemed to get our rhythm back but fell short in the end."
Corban's early woes led to College of Idaho claiming sets one and two by relatively healthy margins, with the Warriors responding well in the third set to stay alive. Despite a stout effort in the fourth game, the two-set deficit proved too much for the Navy and Gold to overcome.
The Warriors struggled to get anything going offensively in the defeat, finishing the match with only one player (Demi Winters, .385 attack percentage) hitting above a .250 clip.
In contrast, the Yotes' high-profile trio of Jackie Van Vliet (14), Ashley Pagan (12), and Taylor Alexander (12) each reached double-digit kill totals, with Van Vliet adding eight blocks and attacking at an absurd .565 mark with just one error on the evening.
Corban and College of Idaho end up splitting the 2018 season series, with the loss giving the Yotes a valuable leg up in the CCC standings as both team vie for the third seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
In the meantime, the Warriors (16-10, 12-5 CCC) will enjoy a day off before taking the court again for the team's final regular-season road match against Walla Walla University on Monday. First serve for the match-up is slated for 3 p.m.
