SURPRISE, Ariz. – Fresh off a trip to the NAIA World Series Championship game in 2017, the No. 5-ranked Corban University softball team got contributions from a variety of players in Wednesday's 2018 season-opener, downing the Ottawa University (Ariz.) Spirit, 10-1. In the nightcap, Corban led 9-3 in the fourth inning, but due to rain, the game was cancelled.

"This was a great win to start our season with," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We had a lot of production from a variety of people, which was fun to see. We had some key defensive stops and some clutch RBI. We saw areas that we want to continue to grow in, but overall this was a great outing for our team and Sabrina."

The Warriors got things going in the second inning, when in her first-career at-bat with Corban, freshman Megan Rybar cranked one over the left-field wall for a two-run home run, giving the Warriors the early 2-0 advantage. In the fourth frame, Tatum Prechtel singled to center field, scoring Rybar to make it 3-0.

In the fifth, Alyssa Doty laced a two-RBI double to right-center, extending Corban's advantage to 5-0, while in the sixth, Sam Woodley blasted a three-run home run over the center field fence to make it 8-0.

The Spirit pulled one back in the bottom half of the sixth frame, but Prechtel continued her great start in the Navy and Gold uniform with a two-RBI single to right-center, making it a 10-1 advantage that the Warriors would close out for the triumph.

At the dish, Woodley led the way with a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI, while Prechtel finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. In addition, Rybar, Doty, Maddy Melton and Mahina Chong each recorded two hits in the victory.

While Corban was good at the dish, senior pitcher Sabrina Boyd was just as effective in the circle, tossing a complete-game five-hitter, allowing just one run while striking out three.

In game two with Corban in the midst of a big fourth inning, an frame in which the Warriors had extended their advantage to 9-3, the rain was deemed to be too much, causing for the game to be cancelled.

Corban (1-0) returns to the field on Thursday when it heads to Phoenix, Ariz., for a doubleheader against Arizona Christian University. First pitch is schedule for 3 p.m. PST.
