VANCOUVER, B.C. – Down 4-0 midway through Sunday's opener, the Corban University baseball team showed grit and resilience, battling back to score six unanswered runs and ultimately claim a series split with the University of British Columbia north of the border. After winning the opener, 6-4, the Warriors lost a tough final game of the series, 4-3.
"It was a tough way to end the weekend, but I'd say we had a successful weekend against a good team," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "We have some areas we need to improve and we will continue to get after it daily to get better."
Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, Nate Cantonwine stepped up to the dish and laced a two-RBI single through the right side to halve the deficit. Zack Simon then doubled to right field to make it a one-run ballgame, and Tanner Marsh followed that up with a clutch two-RBI single to right field to give the Warriors the lead.
Corban added an insurance run in the ninth when Brendan Yawn ripped an RBI single to right field to make it 6-4.
That was all the help Jackson Arnsdorf would need, as he came out of the bullpen in relief for the Warriors and tossed five shutdown innings, dispersing three hits while allowing no runs to earn the win.
At the plate, Daniel Freiburger, Simon, Marsh, and Jared Bell all finished with a pair of hits in the crucial game-three victory.
The final game of the four-game series saw the Navy and Gold take a three-run advantage through the first four innings, but UBC responded with a three-run fifth frame to tie things up.
A stalemate over the next three innings set up the ninth for both squads. Corban got a runner into scoring position, but the Warriors were unable to bring him home, and in the bottom half of the frame, the Thunderbirds took advantage and scored the game-winning run to earn the series split.
Corban (7-13-1, 5-3 NAIA West) returns home next week to host College of Idaho, with games slated for Saturday and Sunday at Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Stadium.
