Krout’s Mammoth Day Leads Pacific to 10-5 Win over Corban Baseball

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – A monstrous day at the plate for Pacific University's Ryan Krout proved too much for the Corban University baseball team to overcome on Tuesday. The Boxer third-baseman went 3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs as the NCAA Division III opponent defeated the Warriors, 10-5.

Jaren Childs got the midweek start for Corban, lasting two and two-thirds and taking the loss despite surrendering no earned runs. Early defensive miscues proved costly to the Navy and Gold, as each of Pacific's first four runs was of the unmerited variety.

Playing from behind, Corban would scratch back two in the fourth via a Nicholas Healey RBI double and a run-scoring single from Brendan Rodegerdts. Brendan Yawn would deliver an RBI single in the fifth to pull the Warriors within one, but Pacific's Krout would respond with two-run homers in back-to-back innings to extend the opposing lead to 8-3.

In search of a comeback, Corban would have a couple of promising offensive opportunities in the late innings, loading the bases with no outs in the seventh frame and filling the sacks with just one out in the eighth. The Warriors would come out of each inning with only one run, however, unable to string together a sustained rally to erase the deficit.

Pacific would add a couple of insurance runs in the bottom half of the eighth, rounding out the 10-5 final tally.

Rodegerdts (2-for-4) paced the Warrior offense in the defeat. His fellow left-side infielder Jared Berard (2-for-5), competing in just his third game in the Navy and Gold, was the only other member of the Corban lineup to finish with multiple knocks.

Corban (8-17-1, 6-6 NAIA West) will have just one day off from competition before returning to action, this time for a crucial NAIA-West doubleheader against (RV) Lewis-Clark State. Thursday's doubleheader in Lewiston, Idaho is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
