KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team dropped a pair of games to (RV) Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday, surrendering a series sweep with the 8-4 and 8-2 losses.
Corban got out to an early start in game one of the doubleheader, tallying four hits and two runs in the offense's first at-bats of the day. Daniel Freiburger got things going, jumpstarting the Navy and Gold with a leadoff triple into the right-center gap. After Josh Ebert brought him home with a groundout, the Warriors would string together a couple of knocks to extend their rally, eventually culminating in a two-out RBI double from Nate Cantonwine.
Lewis-Clark State would get those runs right back in the third, helped in part by a couple of Corban errors. Defensive miscues would plague the Navy and Gold throughout the contest, as Corban's five errors led to three of LCSC's eight runs being unearned.
Maxwell Jeffrey and Justin Tow would each register RBI knocks to help Corban trim the deficit in the ninth, but it would be too little, too late, as LCSC would clinch the series win with the 8-4 victory.
Tow would finish with four hits (4-for-5) from the cleanup spot, while Jeffrey's 2-for-5 day would be his 10th multi-hit performance in his first 20 games.
It was Darren Trainor who led the way for LCSC in the win, as the senior backstop went a ludicrous 5-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs in the triumph. In addition, centerfielder Jeff Bart did his fair share of damage at the plate, collecting three hits in four at-bats and scoring on three occasions.
Both teams pushed runs across in the first inning of game two, though both starting pitchers—Jackson Arnsdorf for Corban and Anthony Toribio for Lewis-Clark State—would settle in for scoreless second and third frames.
Lewis-Clark State would get to Arnsdorf in the fourth, however, seeing five-straight baserunners reach with two outs and plating three runs in the inning. The LCSC lead would extend to 5-1 in the seventh on an RBI sac fly from Bart, and the floodgates would open with a three-run eighth.
The Corban pitching staff struggled with command throughout the contest, handing out four base-on-balls and allowing seven LCSC hitters to reach via a hit-by-pitch.
With the two wins today, LCSC (20-11-1, 12-6 NAIA West) claims a series sweep in the NAIA-West set, vaulting the squad into sole possession of second place in the conference standings.
Corban's conference record (10-21-1, 8-10 NAIA West) now drops below .500 for the first time in 2019, falling to fourth place in the NAIA-West rankings behind British Columbia, LCSC, and College of Idaho.
The Warriors will be back in action next weekend against Oregon Tech, traveling down to Klamath Falls, Ore. for a four-game set with the Hustlin' Owls on April 6 and 7.
