Warrior Baseball Earns Important Game-One Win in Day-One Split in Canada

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Jonathan Russomano and Jacob Asa were absolutely outstanding for the Corban University baseball team on Saturday, lifting the Warriors to a 5-1 win in game one over the University of British Columbia. The Warriors went on to split the day after falling in game two, 10-3.

"I like the way the boys competed today," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "Take away one inning and those are two tough ball games. UBC is a good team, and I'm looking forward to seeing the boys come out and repeat this effort."

Saturday's opener saw Russomano dealing effectively early on, shutting down a powerful Thunderbird offense with both speed and finesse. Russomano went 5.2 frames of three-hit baseball, striking out four while allowing now runs.

Jacob Asa then came on in relief for the Warriors, and he maintained his command throughout, ultimately going 3.1 innings while allowing just two hits and one unearned run.

All the while, at the dish, the Warriors manufactured the first run of the game thanks to an RBI groundout from Josh Ebert, scoring Jared Bell to take the one-run advantage in the sixth.

Then in the ninth, Brendan Yawn came off the bench in a pinch-hit situation with the bases loaded and one out, and he came through in the clutch, lacing a bases-clearing 3-RBI double down the left-field line.

The Warriors would take on one more, and that was more than enough in the critical game-one win.

Corban totaled just four hits in the triumph, but the Warriors made them count.

Game two saw a tight affair all the way through, until a late inning pushed UBC in front by a large margin, ultimately winning by seven runs to earn the day-one split.

Justin Tow went 2-for-4 at the dish with two runs scored, while Jared Bell went 2-for-4 and two RBI in the defeat.

Corban (6-12-1, 4-2 NAIA West) and UBC (9-10, 4-2 NAIA West) and UBC are back on the diamond tomorrow in Vancouver, slated for an 11am/2pm doubleheader. LIVE STATS will be available here.
