FOREST GROVE, Ore. – It was yet another successful day for the Corban University men's and women's track & field teams on Saturday, as the Warrior athletes braved harsh conditions to turn in a strong composite effort at the Pacific Luau Invitational.
RESULTS
"We had some outstanding performances today," said head coach Norm Berney. "We rested most of our distance runners in preparation for next weekend and the conference championships. We also rested some of our multi-event athletes so they could get ready for the multi-event championships next Thursday and Friday in La Grande."
Headlining the day's performances was the women's 4x100-meter relay team, which breezed by the competition with a time of 48.82 seconds to claim first place in the event. The group of four—MacKenzie Wilson, Selina Newingham, Leah McClain, and Kristi Childers—has only gotten better as the season has progressed, boding well for the quartet as the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Championships rapidly approach.
"It was an incredible effort for our 4x100 team," Berney said about the group, "Particularly in the rainy, 46-degree weather."
A pair of the Navy and Gold's multi-sport athletes—Lindsay Asplund and Jordan Woodvine—also turned heads at the event. Asplund took home second in the 400-meter hurdles, registering a time of 1:05.97 in the event. Woodvine, who was making her 2019 debut for the women's track & field team, uncorked a new personal-best mark of 135' 10" (third overall) in the hammer throw, topping her previous career-best by seven feet. She also took home second in the shotput with a throw of 39'8".
On the men's side, Michael Schmidt keeps finding new ways to impress, setting a new standard for himself in the long jump with a strong effort of 22' 3.5" in the event. He placed second among the field of 16.
Shane Davis continued his impressive rookie season as a member of the Navy and Gold, finishing as the runner-up in the 800 meters, clocking a new personal-record time of 1:58.52. It's the second time this season the talented newcomer has eclipsed the two-minute mark in the event.
The Corban decathletes and heptathletes will now look ahead to the CCC Multi-Event Championships, which will be hosted by Eastern Oregon University on April 18-19. The remainder of the squad will compete again next Saturday, traveling north to Oregon City, Ore. for the Clackamas Invite.
