Purnell Sets School Record in Hammer Throw for Corban T&F at Willamette Opener

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University men's and women's track & field teams headed across town to the campus of Willamette University for the Willamette Opener, where several Warrior track and field athletes were able to set personal bests in their respective events, including a school record performance in the shot-put by Kenny Purnell.

RESULTS

"It was another good day today with over 10 conference qualifiers," said head coach Norm Berney. "Kenny set the school record in the hammer, Morgan Bayes won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, and Selina Newingham set her personal best and won the 100-meter dash. It has been a great start to our track season, and the hard work is paying off."

Purnell's 152' 8" throw with the hammer set Corban's all-time record in the event, while qualifying him for the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) tournament. He was also able to post the second-best shot-put distance in school history with a 14.16m performance.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Morgan Bayes was able to cross the finish line with the victory, posting a 1:05.93 time, qualifying her for the conference tournament as well.

Newingham (12.65), Hannah Beaulieu (13.18), and Victoria Sandoval (13.28) swept the podium in the 100-meter dash, while Newingham posted her personal record time, which is good for fourth best all-time in Corban history.

Just a few members of the two Warrior squads spent the day at Linfield College, competing in day two at the Erik Anderson Memorial Invite in McMinnville. Valerie Schmidt and Joshua Anderson turned in notable performances, as Schmidt placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (16.21) and seventh in the high jump (4' 9"), while Anderson finished as the runner-up in the triple jump (43' 9").

The Warriors will face a short layover, as they will prepare to meet the Bearcats of Willamette University for a dual meet, which will once again be held at McCulloch Stadium on the campus of Willamette. The meet will take place on Thursday, March 14 at 4 p.m.
