Kagey Reveals 2020 Recruiting Class for Corban Men’s Soccer

SALEM, Ore. – Entering his second season at the helm of the Corban University men's soccer program, head coach Tim Kagey officially announced the squad's 2020 recruiting class on Tuesday afternoon.

It will be a total of 16 new faces that will join the already highly touted squad, with the additions fortifying the team's hopes of returning to the NAIA National Championships for an eighth-straight season this fall.

"I am excited about this incoming group," said Kagey. "This class fills some immediate spots, while also bringing in the strongest freshman class we've had in recent years."

Giancarlo Canas – 5'10" – Midfielder – Santa Monica HS/University of Antelope Valley – Los Angeles, Calif.

Canas brings an impressive résumé to the Navy and Gold, having just earned First-Team All-Conference honors at University of Antelope Valley (UAV) in 2019. He was the Cal-Pac's number one point-getter last season and ranked 21st in the NAIA in goals scored. Previously, Canas played for both California State University at Northridge (2015-16) and Santa Monica College (2017) before heading to UAV.

Canas will be a graduate student at Corban, obtaining his master's in business administration to become a hospital administrator.

Jose Peralta – 5'8" – Midfielder – Riverside HS/Walla Walla Community College. – Boardman, Ore.

A standout and speedy midfielder who brings experience and versatility to the Warrior midfield, Peralta has already shown his skill at the collegiate level. While he was at Walla Walla Community College, he enjoyed two strong years of play, during which he was named a Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) All-Star.

Peralta plans to major in agricultural business at Corban.

Jose Vicente – 5'9" – Midfielder – Oak Ridge HS – Wellington, Fla.

Vicente brings a traveled experience to the Navy and Gold, having played for clubs in Spain and the United States. He hails from Florida and attended Oak Ridge High School, where he competed for just one year. Much of his time playing soccer was spent at clubs like the Wellington Wave, PSG Academy Florida, and Rayo Vallecano academy in Madrid, Spain. Rayo Vallecano is a professional organization that previously competed in La Liga, but was relegated to the Segunda Division in 2016. Vicente was a part of the youth academy programs at Rayo Vallecano and has always been known as a defensive stalwart.

Vicente hopes to earn his degree in sports and recreation management in his time at the university. 

Carlos Reyes-Aviles – 5'10" – Forward – South Albany HS – Albany, Ore.

A local product, Reyes-Aviles graduated from South Albany High School this spring after four years of athletic dominance, totaling three All-Conference and two All-State honors in his time there. He was also a high school All-American nominee during his time at South Albany, in addition to being a part of the West Region IV ODP team.

Reyes-Aviles will study education at Corban with hopes of becoming a teacher.

Brandon Farfan – 5'10" – Midfielder – Clackamas HS – Clackamas, Ore.

This midfield prospect played four seasons of prep soccer at Clackamas High School, earning First-Team All-Conference honors twice. In addition, he was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Year in his conference, while also accruing First-Team All-State accolades at the 6A level. Farfan competed as part of the Riverplate 01 and 02 teams, which won several club championships during his time with them.

Farfan plans to major in business while at Corban.

Riley Menezes – 6'2" – Defender – Woodburn HS – Keizer, Ore.

As a two-sport star in his prep days, Menezes earned his stripes not only on the pitch, but also on the track. The athletic defender from Woodburn High School will hope to translate his high school success to the collegiate ranks. He was a state champion in all four years that he played soccer for the Bulldogs, and was named to the All-Conference First Team in his junior and senior seasons. Menezes played club soccer for both the Capital FC Timbers and the Westside Timbers, winning a State Cup with each team.

Menezes will be a business major upon his arrival at Corban.

Noah Gatchet – 5'11" – Midfielder – McNary HS – Keizer, Ore.

Gatchet, a local product, comes to Corban from nearby McNary High School. While competing there, he excelled in multiple sports, not only playing soccer, but spending time on the wrestling mat for two years as well. He is quite familiar with the Navy and Gold's home pitch, as he suited up for the Capital FC Timbers during the summer of 2019.

Gatchet will study business during his time at Corban.

Noah Dreves – 5'10" – Midfielder/Forward – Central Valley HS/North Idaho College – Spokane, Wash.

After two strong years at North Idaho College, Dreves is looking to make a name for himself in the Navy and Gold. After earning NWAC All-Star honors, his strong pedigree at the junior college level should provide another dynamic weapon for Kagey and company. Dreves also played club soccer for the Spokane Shadow. 

Eric Bengana – 5'6" – Midfielder – Centennial HS – Boise, Idaho

Bengana, a defensive midfielder, finds himself at Corban after a strong high school career with Centennial High School. The Boise, Idaho native also played at the club level for the Idaho Rush Premiere 02, hoping to make an impact in the Navy and Gold midfield this fall.

Jacob Luhrs – 6'3" – Defender/Midfielder – West Valley HS/North Idaho College – Fairbanks, Alaska

A talented transfer, Luhrs serves as a dynamic and experienced addition to Corban's roster. After a year at the College of St. Scholastica, where he was named an All-Conference Honorable Mention, he took a year-long hiatus in which he studied at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. He then returned to the pitch at North Idaho College and became an NWAC All-Star. Luhrs also played for Cook Inlet S.C. Premier, which won the conference title during the summer of 2019.

While attending the university, Luhrs intends to earn a degree in business, with hopes of coaching or managing in his career.

Miciah Kirton – 5'10" – Defender – Southridge HS – Beaverton, Ore.

Kirton will make the trip south on Interstate 5 to join the Warriors, coming to Corban from Southridge High School. The Beaverton, Ore. native will don the Navy and Gold and hope to make a positive impact on the Warriors' chances in 2020. He was a Westside Timbers 02B State Cup Champion on multiple occasions. In addition, he has a reputation for athleticism and versatility, as he ran cross country and track in high school.

Kirton will be studying kinesiology, with hopes of getting into physical therapy in his professional career.

Omar Garcia – 5'9" – Midfielder – Century HS/Northwest College – Hillsboro, Ore.

After a break from the pitch, Garcia will return to action this fall, bringing a wealth of experience to Corban's roster. The Hillsboro, Ore. native last played at the collegiate level in 2014 at Northwest College, scoring 12 goals and tallying eight assists during his two years there.

Garcia will be an education major in his time at Corban, with hopes of becoming a school counselor.

Miles Belanger – 5'9" – Defender/Midfielder – Grace Christian School – Anchorage, Alaska

Belanger is also coming off a brief hiatus from the pitch, as he graduated high school from Grace Christian in 2018. A talented leader, he served as his team's captain for three out of four years there, while also being a two-time All-Conference honoree.

Belanger will be a junior academically at Corban, studying communications.

Blaise Herring – 5'7" – Defender/Forward – West Salem HS – Salem, Ore.

Another local product, Herring hopes to make an immediate impact as a swiss-army knife on the pitch for the Navy and Gold. He attended West Salem High School, where he enjoyed a standout career, and his ability to play anywhere on the field makes him a versatile asset for Corban's program.

Herring will be studying criminal justice at Corban.

Luis Lopez – 5'7" – Defender/Midfielder – McNary HS – Salem, Ore.

The young and talented Lopez join's the Warriors' ranks after an impressive eight-goal and 10-assist season during his senior campaign at McNary High School. He earned All-Conference Honorable-Mention accolades during his junior season, but then one-upped himself to become a First-Team selection his senior year. He played for Capital FC in 2019 and won the State Cup as a member of the club.

Lopez will be attending Corban to earn a degree in psychology.

Isaac Pureco – 5'10" – Goalkeeper – Woodburn HS – Woodburn, Ore.

Pureco, the lone goalkeeper in this year's class, hails from nearby Woodburn, Ore., where he enjoyed a strong career at Woodburn High School.

Pureco will be studying business while at Corban.

Ismael Carrillo – 5'10" – Defender – North Marion HS/Chemeketa CC – Aurora, Ore.

A product of nearby Chemeketa Community College, Carillo brings an impressive track record from his time competing at the high school and junior college levels. While attending North Marion High School, he was a three-time All-League honoree, while also collecting a state championship at the 4A level during his sophomore year. In his time at Chemeketa, he was named an NWAC All-Star after the 2019 season.

Carrillo intends to study kinesiology during his time at Corban.

This list of newcomers will join a strong returning core as the program looks to build upon a historic 2019 season, during which Corban claimed both the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Regular-Season and Tournament titles, all while going undefeated for the first time in program history.

With the squad set to return six of its eight All-Conference honorees from last year—including NAIA All-American Matheus Giron—anticipation is high for the 2020 campaign.
