NAIA Opening Round Preview – Corban Volleyball Looking for Return to Final Site

SALEM, Ore. – Fresh off the third Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament Championship in the program's history, the No. 13-ranked Corban University volleyball team is ready for its NAIA Opening Round matchup with (RV) The Master's University this Saturday. The two teams will duel at 1 p.m. on Tim Hills Court inside of the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center, vying for a berth to the NAIA Final Site in Sioux City, Iowa.

Live video and live stats for the match will be available HERE.

This is Corban's fifth-straight season with a berth to the NAIA Tournament, and the squad has reached the NAIA Final Site in each of those campaigns.

Among the most prolific offenses in the country, the Warriors rank 10th in the NAIA in assist per game (12.6), and 16th in the nation in both hitting percentage (.228) and kills per game (13.4).

Avari Ridgway (.220 attack percentage) boasts a team-leading 3.08 kills per set, which ranks fourth in the CCC. Newcomers Ally Tow (2.54 kills per set, .252 attack percentage) and Rylee Troutman (2.46 kills per set, .227 attack percentage) have also played integral roles in the Navy and Gold's offensive efforts. Tow was recently named the CCC Attacker of the Week for her role in the squad's tournament-title run, and Troutman was honored as the conference's Freshman of the Year for her exceptional rookie campaign.

Averaging the third most digs per set in the CCC with 4.9, Kealani Ontai will bring her trademark defensive prowess to the Warriors' postseason push. Helping direct the offense, Jadyn Mullen leads the squad with 335 total assists (5.88 assists per set).

All five of the players mentioned above earned All-Conference accolades for the Navy and Gold, playing a huge part in the team's success to this point.

In addition to Mullen, Ciarra Judson should see significant time on the court, as the two split much of the setting duties throughout the 2020-21 campaign.

Providing a boost on both sides of the ball, Cora Furman has turned in an exceptional rookie season at the net for the Navy and Gold, ranking 26th in the NAIA in blocks per game (1.1), while also notching 1.32 putaways a set.

Leaders with experience on the biggest stage, veterans Cassie Cunningham, Maddie Stimmel and Sarena Bartley all provide a significant boost both on and off the court for the young Warrior squad.

Meanwhile, The Master's earned its way to the NAIA Opening Round via the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) East Division title, going 10-2 (8-2 GSAC) in the regular season.

Head coach Annett Davis relies heavily on All-GSAC opposite hitter Madi Maitland (1.93 kills per set, .250 attack percentage, 0.83 blocks per set) and fellow All-Conference honoree Jessi Swenning (2.09 kills per set, .236 attack percentage, 0.87 blocks per set), who have each compiled impressive all-around seasons for the Mustangs.

The Master's Katie Emmerling, who was recently named the GSAC Player of the Year, will be a setter to watch in Saturday's matchup, and she comes into the competition averaging 9.53 assists per set, tied for 31st in the NAIA.

Corban and The Master's have only matched up twice in the past decade, with the Warriors claiming both matchups. Most recently, the Navy and Gold defeated the Mustangs in four sets in pool play at the NAIA National Championships in 2018.

After Saturday's action, the winner will advance to the NAIA Final Site, which will host the top-24 remaining teams on April 27-May 1. The NAIA's pinnacle event will be hosted at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
