Corban Men’s Wrestling Shines in Season Opening Simpson Duals

Redding, Calif. – In their first set of duals to open the 2022-23 season, the (RV) Corban University Men's Wrestling team left Redding with a 3-1 record in exhibition dual matches, claiming victories over Sierra College, hosts Simpson University, and Santa Rosa Junior College.

"It was great seeing our guys perform well today in our season opener," Warriors' Interim Head Coach Kary Hadden shared earlier today. "They handled adversity and clutched out some huge decisions, this is definitely a special group of young men!"

The Warriors opened their season with an early morning dual match against Fresno City College, where the Rams took advantage of an early fall, decision, and major decision in a row in their favor to extend their lead to 19-6, all but forcing Corban into having to win the remaining matchups to find a win.

Redshirt sophomore David Rubio managed to nab a 5-2 decision over the Rams' Roman Mendez in the 165-weight class to break FCC's streak, but enough damage had already been done. Redshirt freshman German Munoz scored a fall in seven minutes to earn six points, and transfer junior Sven Lukner capped the first dual in the 285 class for his first collegiate wrestling win.

The second dual against the Wolverines of Sierra College proved to be a more dominant matchup for the Warriors, as only one Corban student-athlete fell to a Sierra wrestler, with the only other Wolverine points scoring via weight class forfeit.

After the first two weight class matchups resulted in Sierra forfeit losses, freshman Luke Jensen owned the 141-class with a dominate 16-0 technical fall over Wolverines' Joaquin Mosqueda. Senior Michael Murphy and Rubio earned back-to-back pins, while junior Matthew Bartlett and Munoz scored consecutive major decisions to give the Warriors a commanding lead. Lukner improved to 2-0 with a pin of Sierra's Joshua Colburn in 2:18 to give Corban a 43-12 team win.

The host institution in Simpson University was on the docket next for Corban, as the Warriors' jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back. Freshman Brayden Boyd earned his third victory of the day with a major decision in the 125-class, followed by a decision win by freshman Bo Davis and another technical fall for Jensen.

The Red Hawks earned a major decision and a forfeit win to climb within two points, but the Warriors swept the remainder of the matchups to earn a dominate 35-10 dual win in their third matchup of the day. Lukner's third win of the day would be a major upset, as his 3-1 decision in upset the No. 3 ranked in the NAIA for the 285-weight class, Red Hawks' Jacob Vincent.

The final dual of the season opening day found the Warriors with the Santa Rose Bear Cubs on the mat, where the Warriors turned four of the five matchups to be played out into pins, with SRJC scoring on a forfeit and a pin to managed 12 points in a 48-12 final dual win for Corban.

The Warriors will return to the mats this upcoming week, as they will play host to CCC opponent Warner Pacific University at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center at 6pm PDT on Thursday, November 3rd.
