CLACKAMAS, Ore. – The (RV) Corban University Men's Wrestling team (1-1) took to the mats this afternoon against the four-time NJCAA National Champion Clackamas Community College wrestling program in an exhibition matchup, where the Warriors came out on top of a one-sided dual win, 32-9, over the Cougars.
"Without the services of Michael and David, our guys were still able to dig deep and power their way to another impressive victory over a good Clackamas team, taking eight of the ten matches and defeating the four-time national champions in their own gym!" Warriors' Head Coach Kary Hadden shared shortly after the dual ended.
In the program's short four-year history, Corban Men's Wrestling has never defeated the NJCAA powerhouse Cougars in a head-to-head dual meet, having lost to them 17-34 and 7-38 in their prior matchups. That all came to an end on Saturday afternoon, where the Warriors steamrolled their way through the perennial program with a majority of the starting weight class representatives for Corban hailing from the freshman class.
Warriors' freshman Brayden Boyd kicked off the dual by making quick work of his Cougar opponent Kai Matsunaga in the 125-weight class, pinning him in 1:44 to give Corban a 6-0 advantage on the team score, thus beginning a set of five-straight match wins for the Navy and Gold.
Freshman Bo Davis earned a gritty 9-4 decision victory over Clackamas Elijah Bundro in the battle of 133 wrestlers, while freshman Luke Jensen bagged a 13-4 major decision over Justin Rodriguez, one of the best wrestlers in the NJCAA for the 141-weight class.
Seeing his first mat action in multiple weeks, freshman Wylder Kraght took down Dante Oliverio with determination in a 7-1 decision, before freshman Jordan Piercy staged an incredible pin in 1:30 over Cougars' Jacob Kessinger to clinch the upset by fall.
Clackamas earned their first team points of the day in the 165-weight class by virtue of a 16-0 technical fall, but Corban was able to tally seven more points in the 174 and 184 groups via an 18-9 major decision from junior Matthew Bartlett and a persistent 4-2 decision for redshirt freshman German Munoz, respectively.
A major decision win for Cougars' Michael Gasper, 12-3, in the 197-weight class proved to be a "too little, too late" scenario for the hometown squad, as Corban junior Sven Lukner was all over Clackamas' Braden Pease in a 9-4 decision to wrap up the dual, with the Warriors taking the commanding 32-9 victory.
The Corban Men's Wrestling team will next travel south to one of the largest collegiate wrestling tournaments of the year, as they will head to Reno, Nevada for the Reno Tournament of Champions on December 18th, which is slated to run all day in the Reno Events Center.
