PORTLAND, Ore. – Despite a strong effort on the mound from Mason Shaw, the Corban University baseball team was unable to figure out No. 3 Lewis-Clark State College's ace Trent Sellers on Friday afternoon, falling by a 4-0 final score under the lights at Joe Etzel Field. Sellers tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout, aided by a pair of long balls from Aidan Nagle.
With the win, LC State (34-1, 5-0 CCC) sets a new program record with 28-consecutive wins.
Nagle's first homer came in the first inning, a high, skyscraping blast to right-center field.
He then struck again in the fourth, this time with a two-run shot that sliced just inside the left-field foul pole.
The visitors' fourth and final run came in the eighth, when Luke White grounded a single through the middle of the infield. Sam Linscott—who started the play at first base—tried to go first to third on the base paths, and when he dove into third, Corban center fielder Kyle Clay's throw deflected off his chest and trickled into the home dugout, advancing him home.
Lewis-Clark tried to pad its lead in the ninth, but twice in a row, Corban's outfielders gunned down an LC runner trying to score from second on a single. Clay—who also was the only member of the Navy and Gold to collect a hit against Sellers on Friday—cut down Riley Way with a cannon from center field.
On the next play, it was Morgan Hostetler who hit his cut-off man on a Linscott single, and the Warrior infield executed a rundown between home and third to escape the threat.
Despite the strong offensive and defensive efforts, the Corban bats couldn't get traction against Sellers. The LC State ace struck out 14 in the impressive effort on the bump.
Shaw, his counterpart, was also exceptional. The Navy and Gold starter competed valiantly in seven and one-third innings, striking out five and surrendering four runs (three earned).
Corban (13-15-1, 0-5 CCC) will be back in action against LC tomorrow, playing in two more games on the campus of University of Portland. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
