Lions Spoil Warriors’ Senior Day Festivities with First Win in Series History

SALEM, Ore. – In their final home contest of the 2023 regular season, the Corban University Men's Soccer team was unable to end the homestand on a high note before departing for a two-week road trip to end the year, falling 3-1 to Multnomah University for the Lions' first-ever victory over the Warriors. Multnomah matched their goal total for the entire seven-year series in one match this afternoon, avoiding a shutout at the hands of the Warriors for the first time since 2018.

"Unfortunately, we did not have our best performance tonight," Warriors' head coach Corbin Bowers said. "It took us the whole first half to get going and we didn't have enough momentum to turn around the match. It was a privilege to honor our seniors and we look to bounce back at the business end of the season."

The Lions (4-8-1, 2-6-1) took advantage early and often in their final road contest of the 2023 season, scoring in the 20th and 37th minutes on unassisted goals by defender Bashir Zahouri and forward Paul Einero. The offense struggled to find opportunities in the opening half for the Warriors (2-5-6, 2-3-4), tallying just one total shot in forty-five minutes of play.

However, the Navy and Gold were able to cut their deficit in half just over a minute into the second half, as Senior Day honorees midfielder Gian Gargurevich and forward Nate Sherwood connected for Gargurevich's second goal of the season, while Sherwood secured the 15th assist of his storied Corban career.

Needing just over forty-three minutes of solid defense and one more score to turn the tides on the Lions, it was the midfielder duo of Aghlies Lamara and Camilo Vergara who silenced the Warrior Nation crowd and kept the Warriors from completing a comeback bid, as Lamara scored on an assist from Vergara in the 70th minute to conclude the scoring portion of today's match.

Corban freshman midfielder Samuel Montes took a team-high three shots today, one of which came on goal, with redshirt sophomore forward Irwin Leon right behind at two shots himself. Multnomah forward Nazir Zahouri led all players in shots with four this afternoon.

Warriors' redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Isaac Pureco tallied double-digit saves for the first time in his career with ten at the Outdoor Athletic Complex today, but allowed three goals for his third loss of the season. Meanwhile, Lions' goalkeeper Pablo Mendoza picked up his first win of the season after allowing one goal and snagging five saves.

Four-straight games on the road is how the Warriors will end the 2023 regular season as they continue to make the push towards locking up a postseason appearance for the eleventh consecutive year. They'll begin the road trip with a quick jump over the eastern Oregon border and play a 4pm MT (3pm PT) contest with The College of Idaho Yotes (8-2-2, 7-1-1).
