GREAT FALLS, Mont. – A different looking Warriors team stepped on the floor Saturday night against a No. 24-ranked University of Providence Argonaut foe. Corban University Women's Basketball jumped out early to a 17-12 lead and a 32-30 halftime score, but a strong third quarter, including a 10-4 run to start the second half, put Providence on top for good, ending with a final score of 66-57.
"I was very proud of how the team bounced back tonight," Warriors' head coach Bill Pilgeram shared following the close loss. "They played with a lot of heart and passion against a very good team. This team will do nothing but get better and they showed it tonight."
The Navy and Gold (1-2) dropped their second contest of the Montana road trip following a loss on Friday to Montana State University-Northern. The No. 24-ranked Argos (3-0) saw an impassioned Warrior team, sparked by a strong defensive effort. Forcing three offensive fouls in the first half and smothering ball pressure propelled the Warrior offense. However, the second half was dictated by graduate student guard Ashlee Maldonado and senior forward Maddy Dixon, both of which were named Preseason Frontier Conference First Team nominees.
Senior guard Maddie Godwin led the Warriors offensively with 18 points on 8-for-17 shooting and added a pair of steals, while freshman guard Lizzy Bennett continues to impress in her first season in the Navy and Gold by adding 10 points. Freshman guard Teayona Hoard impacted both sides of the floor with her intense ball pressure while adding a pair of 3's in her 8-point night.
University of Providence was settled by the veteran presence of forward Maddy Dixon dropping a game-high 19 points, six assists and six rebounds. As a team, the Argonauts shot 47.6% from the field, using their size and strength to dominate the points in the paint 40 to 18.
The Warriors are back on the road next weekend at the Northwest Classic in Kirkland, Washington. Corban will play The Master's University (2-0) out of Southern California and No.16 ranked Rocky Mountain College (3-0) out of Montana.
