SALEM, Ore. – In their final home doubleheader of the 2023 regular season, the Corban University Softball team (9-31, 7-20) were unable to get the bats going to secure at least one Senior Day victory, falling 5-0 and 1-0 to the No. 24-ranked Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers (27-15, 16-10) in their penultimate weekend of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play.
"Proud of the warriors this weekend!" Corban Head Coach Danyelle Huber shared. "I'm especially proud of the seniors and their overall growth throughout the season. Pretty emotional weekend for us, as these seniors mean the world to me and the team. They are the definition of selfless leaders. The pitching staff this weekend was stellar as well. Looking forward to one more series with them in Montana!"
Game 1 – No. 24 EOU 5, Corban 0
Eastern Oregon tallied five runs over the course of six innings with their ace in the circle, which is more than they would need once again as stellar pitching paved the way to a CCC series-clinching victory.
The only offense the Warriors could muster the entire game was on the very first at-bat of the first and last innings, as sophomore centerfielder Jody Fischer slapped an infield base hit that narrowly evaded the grasp of EOU third baseman Gates Leatherwood, while junior leftfielder Sarah Bradshaw singled up the middle in the bottom of the seventh.
EOU starting pitcher Kaylie Hoskins clinched her second shutout of the weekend by tossing a complete game two-hitter, striking out 10 more batters for 25 in total on the weekend series. She walked six batters along the way.
Warriors' freshman starting pitcher Amy Jankowski was credited with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits through 3.0 innings pitched, walking two batters and striking out one. Freshman relief pitcher Vanesa Hulett-Quinones was tagged for three runs on three hits after walking a quartet of hitters in 4.0 innings.
Mountaineers' designated Player Addison Ribordy was the only student-athlete in game three of the series to achieve a multi-hit performance, adding an RBI to her resume as well. Leadoff hitter and right fielder Haley Tyree added a single base hit and RBI with two runs scored.
Game 2 – No. 24 EOU 1, Corban 0
Two incredible pitching performances highlighted the fourth non-conference contest between the Warriors and Mounties, as a grand total of one run and eight hits were allowed by both starting pitchers combined.
The lone run to cross home plate eventually stood to give the Mounties a 3-1 series win, as third baseman Hannah Tyree singled into left centerfield to score Leatherwood from second base. Hannah Tyree would go on to have both of EOU's hits in game four, along with the only RBI.
Corban sophomore starting pitcher Emmaleena Wood tossed one of her best appearances of the season this afternoon, allowing just one run and a pair of hits in an unfortunate loss. She also struck out two batters and walked four.
Meanwhile, Mountaineers' starting pitcher Kaylin Winans earned another shutout for the visitors at Warrior Field, allowing six hits on the day and striking out four. Despite allowing three times as many hits as Wood, Winans was able to pitch around multiple scoring opportunities to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard.
The Navy and Gold spread out six hits over six different hitters, with two of the three seniors being honored earning two of them in the forms of first baseman Paia'ala Wilcox-Molina and Bradshaw.
Corban Softball will conclude the 2023 regular season next Thursday and Friday for a pair of weekday CCC doubleheaders with the University of Providence Argos (7-29, 3-23).
