Home Stand Begins with Narrow Loss for Corban Men’s Soccer

SALEM, Ore. – Two very different second halves resulted in a 2-1 loss for the Corban University Men's Soccer team, as the Warriors fell to the University of Providence earlier this afternoon at the Outdoor Athletic Complex.

"The squad carried out a very strong first half and a lot went well for us," head coach Corbin Bowers stated. "Unfortunately, the second half was a different story, and we were not able to sustain our dominance. Another opportunity for this group to learn how to hold on to a lead and see out a game to the very end. It stings now but will make us better in the long run."

It took barely over five minutes of play for the Warriors (1-4-3, 1-2-1) to find the opening score, as redshirt senior Nate Sherwood sprinted past the entire Argos' (5-4-0, 3-2-0) defensive unit via a cross by redshirt sophomore Bryan Nicolas, sliding a shot into the bottom left corner of the net for his third goal of the season.

Unfortunately for Warrior Nation, the offense would ebb over the remainder of the contest, finding plenty of shot opportunities but unable to locate the back of the net. Meanwhile, Providence made the most of their eight second half shots, cashing in on two separate occasions on solo performances.

Forward Ibrahima Barry and midfielder Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld each scored for the Argos in their come-from-behind victory, scoring goals in the 46th and 58th minutes, respectively. Each of them scored unassisted, with Barry's coming from outside the penalty box and Schmalfeld's on a rebound off the Warriors' goalkeeper.

Eight yellow cards and a red card were handed out this afternoon, as the Warriors and Argos battled to the bitter end in the three-score contest. A grand total of 27 fouls were called by the officiating crew, allowing a handful of offensive opportunities for both squads, with the Warriors leading 20-15 in shots taken.

The Argos made the halftime decision to start goalkeeper Teddy Benbow over starter Thomas Sine, who stepped up in a huge way for Providence by defending three shots in the second half to keep the Warriors scoreless over the final forty-five minutes. Sine allowed the single goal to Sherwood and had six saves in the process. Corban freshman goalkeeper Miguel Trujillo accepted the loss by allowing two goals and hauling in six saves.

The Navy and Gold continue their homestand tomorrow at 12:30pm PT, when they're set to host Carroll College (4-2-1, 4-1-0) at the Outdoor Athletic Complex.
