SALEM, Ore. – A blistering 71.4% from the field in the opening quarter by the road team was detrimental enough for the Corban University Women's Basketball team to trail for a majority of the game this evening, as the Yotes of The College of Idaho hopped out to an early double-digit lead and emerged victorious on the road, 75-67.
"The first quarter was the difference tonight," admitted Warriors' head coach Bill Pilgeram. "Although we were able to play even the rest of the game, we couldn't string together enough momentum to overcome the deficit."
Despite scoring the first basket of the evening, the Warriors (5-9, 4-4) struggled to keep the Yotes (4-11, 4-5) off the scoreboard in a highly efficient fourth quarter, including a 13-0 run following freshman guard Autumn Agnew's game-opening basket. C of I ended the quarter with a 25-14 advantage and never let the lead drop below five points for the remainder of the contest.
Corban senior guard Maddie Godwin was the lone Warrior in double-figures tonight, scoring 17 points and adding five rebounds along the way. Fellow senior guard Kirsten Koehnke submitted another well-rounded effort of six points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while Agnew added nine points, four boards, and four assists.
Forward Brooke Beresford dropped a game-high 24 points on 9-for-14 field goal shooting from the field while hauling in five rebounds. Off the bench, forward Emma Anderson scored 13 points and secured eight rebounds to provide the Yotes with 24 valuable minutes with multiple starters in foul trouble early in the contest.
Corban women's basketball is back at home tomorrow afternoon in a 3pm matchup with Eastern Oregon University (9-4, 5-4).
