Ganchenko’s Second Half Score Forces Road Draw with Evergreen State

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Corban University Women's Soccer team was unable to extend their winning streak on the road against The Evergreen State College, as a pair of second half goals, one by either squad, resulted in the 1-1 draw in western Washington this afternoon.

"The energy and attitudes were both great, but we just didn't capitalize on our opportunities today," Corban head coach Travez Whyte stated. "The plan is to build on this energy and attitude for tomorrow as we finish this weekend strong. There were lots of beautiful moments of soccer from our Warriors and I'm so proud of our development!"

Despite being winless on the season thus far, the Geoducks (0-6-3, 0-4-2) went toe-to-toe with the Warriors (5-5-2, 2-3-1) through the opening period, as the visiting team pounded the goalbox with nine shots compared to just four for Evergreen State, yet were able to force a 0-0 draw through 45 minutes of play due to the stellar gameplay by goalkeeper Anna Varela.

Just seven minutes into the second half, a foul called in Corban's goalbox resulted in a penalty kick try for the Geoducks, where forward Brieanna Dell sank the opportunity and provided the hometown program with their first lead of the day.

However, the Navy and Gold wouldn't trail for long, as junior forward Carley Ganchenko launched a strike from 18 yards out from the pipes and found the back of the net for her first goal of the 2024 season in the 59th minute.

The Warriors would go on to outshoot the Geoducks 22-8 on the day, yet couldn't break the draw in their first conference tie of the season. Evergreen State's Varela ended the afternoon with nine saves, while Corban sophomore goalkeeper Ava Hayes swatted four Geoduck shots on goal aside.

Senior forward Fatima Jimenez tallied a game-high seven shots to nearly outshoot Evergreen State all on her own, while freshman forward Maya Alston added four shots, two of which came on goal.

Corban women's soccer will travel slightly north to Kirkland for their second contest in Washington this weekend, as Northwest University (3-1-3, 2-1-3) will host the Warriors at 12:30pm tomorrow afternoon.
