KIRKLAND, Wash. – For the second time in as many days, the Corban University Women's Soccer team salvaged a draw on the road thanks to the heroics of junior forward Carley Diaz, who scored in the 62nd minute to force a 1-1 tie against Northwest University this afternoon. Diaz scored yesterday as well in their contest with The Evergreen State College, tying the match in the second half on both occasions.
"It wasn't the win that we wanted on paper today, but we have lots to celebrate today," explained Corban head coach Travez Whyte following their second-straight draw. "Huge shoutout to our senior, Carley, who equalized both games for us this weekend. Fatima, Abril, Addie, and Emilly continue to lead by example of what it means to leave it all on the field for their teammates. This weekend provided a lot of growth that is transforming us in the best team we can be this season. We had a lot of beautiful moments this weekend playing, so we will head home and continue the grind. As always, huge thanks to our traveling Warriors for their continuous support."
Another dominant offensive showing with plenty of opportunities to score for the Warriors (5-5-3, 2-3-2) resulted in their second road tie this weekend within Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play, this time against an Eagle (3-1-5, 2-1-5) squad that they split the last four decisions between, registering their first draw between the two programs in each school's history.
Northwest hopped on the scoreboard first thanks to a long strike from midfielder Rachel Snow, who collected a rebounded pass well outside the penalty box from forward Rachel Russell and launched a shot up and over Warriors' sophomore goalkeeper Ava Hayes to hang a 1-0 score on Corban by the halftime break.
After splitting opportunities over the first half with six shots apiece, the Navy and Gold offense picked up the pace in the second period with a 14-5 shot advantage, one of which found the back of the netting to secure a draw rather than a loss to the sixth-ranked Eagles in the CCC standings.
With three defenders in front of her to beat, Ganchenko collected a deep cross by senior midfielder Adilynn Brotnov and flew right past the Eagle defensive line to sneak a goal under Northwest goalkeeper Katie Snow. Ganchenko, a Washington native, provided the Warriors with all the offense they needed this weekend to earn a pair of points in CCC play and help solidify their chances of earning a seed in the 2024 Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament.
Eight of Corban's 20 shots originated from the foot of Ganchenko this afternoon, with half of her attempts coming on goal to power the Warriors' offense and nearly outshoot Northwest on her own. The Eagles managed 11 shots, led by defender Alivia Berry who had three.
Hayes hauled in five saves today in a complete game effort for another draw on her season record, while Eagles' goalkeeper Snow was forced to make seven saves on her end of the field.
The final leg of the Warriors' three-week long road trip starts next Friday in Portland, as they'll travel to face the Multnomah Lions (5-5-3, 3-3-1) for a 12pm kickoff.
