HELENA, Mont. – Despite the first goal of the season for senior forward Fatima Jimenez, the Corban University Women's Soccer fell 2-1 on the road in western Montana earlier today, as the Warriors jumped on the scoreboard in the 86th minute against the Saints of Carroll College but were unable to complete the comeback in the closing minutes, dropping their third-straight Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) contest.
"When we play how we practice, we look and play really well," commented Corban head coach Travez Whyte. "This was another opportunity to teach our Warriors how to stay disciplined and mentally strong collectively. Shoutout to Emilly and Chloe who were able to shine today! Tomorrow is another day to keep growing as a team! Huge thanks to our traveling Warriors as always!"
In their first contest since their 0-2 weekend at the Outdoor Athletic Complex (OAC) last week, the Warriors (4-5-1, 1-3-0) were unable to prevent the Saints (6-1-3, 3-0-1) from taking a first half lead and extending it late in the second thank to a 13-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities that stretched the Corban defense thin.
In the 29th minute, Carroll defender Hayley Smith scored the game-opener with an assist from forward Rachel McAllister and hockey assist by midfielder Emily Funseth to put the home team up 1-0, setting the Saints up for their third win in CCC play to remain undefeated. Forty minutes of gameplay later, forward Delaney Moczan doubled the advantage on an unassisted score that would eventually stand to be the game-winner for Carroll.
As time quickly fleeted from the scoreboard, Jimenez was provided with a penalty kick opportunity after a foul by the Saints in their own penalty box, which she scored against Carroll for their first goal allowed in over two weeks of contests.
In a complete game effort, junior defender Chloe Beck led the Warriors in both shots and shots on goal, tying Jimenez with three in total yet all three attempts resulting in saves for Saints' goalkeeper Maria Ackerman, who had six in total against Corban.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ava Hayes earned the start and the subsequent loss after allowing both Carroll goals with five saves, while redshirt junior goalkeeper Catriona Burns played the remaining 16 minutes of the game and earned a pair of saves. Smith led the Saints with eight shots off the bench, five coming on goal.
